Three R&B Divas Join Forces
THE MEMBERS
Deborah Cox
A multi-talented entertainer, Cox has conquered the R&B and pop charts, including six top-20 Billboard R&B singles, an impressive nine 1 hits on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart and a starring role in Elton John and Tim Rice's Broadway musical, Aida. The first track to be recorded for One Wish was "One Day You Will," written by Diane Warren and produced by David Foster. Then there's "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here," a song co-written by Montell Jordan and his musical director Shep Crawford. Its gospel flavor and Crawford's "straight outta church piano" gave it a live feel, "like it was recorded in concert," Deborah says. "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" was the perfect fit. Not only was it chosen as the first single release from One Wish, but its remixed version, courtesy of New York DJ Hex Hector, took on a life of its own. In no time, it was a certified Platinum smash and soon after became the longest running R&B #1 in Billboard history.
The second track that Deborah cut with Montell was Crawford's "We Can't Be Friends," a duet with R.L. from Next which she describes as "a beautiful ballad with an 'Endless Love' feeling. It's an R&B ballad that's reminiscent of the classic duets from back in the day." And it was another success for Deborah, quickly going Gold. Deborah also stepped into hip hop with "September," a song she wrote with New York producer Stevie J (of Bad Boy) and Gordon Chambers. Similarly, "It's Over Now" was written and produced by Kay-Gee of Naughty By Nature, his first production outside of Next. "It's a real different element," Deborah states. "People aren't even gonna believe that it's me." The title track of the album, "One Wish," was produced by DJ Quik and Deborah describes the track as "a party joint." Quik also raps on the track. Rodney Jerkins wrote and produced two tracks in Los Angeles, "I Never Knew" and "Just When I Think I'm Over You," which Deborah calls "a great uptempo record."
Also crossing international lines is "I Won't Give Up" which Deborah and Lascelles wrote with Trina Powell (a Columbia artist). It takes Deborah back to her jazz roots, and was produced by Lascelles Stephens. In addition to roles in both film and television, Deborah also released a tribute album to the legendary Dinah Washington last year on Universal. For more information on Deborah Cox, please visit Cox performed the Canadian national anthem at the 2008 NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans, Louisiana. She contributed a song entitled "This Gift" to the soundtrack of the 2008 movie Meet the Browns and was part of Cyndi Lauper's True Colors Tour 2008. She is also set to star in Broadway bound Josephine in 2010.
Tamia
Tamia's big break came after she moved to Los Angeles in 1994. She met Quincy Jones when he happened to be chosen to present an award to her in Las Vegas. (Quincy Jones is known for discovering many artists such as Patti Austin, James Ingram, and Tevin Campbell). Quincy asked Tamia if she would like to sing the lead-off single from his first new album in six years, Q's Jook Joint. The single was called You Put A Move On My Heart and it would be the single that introduced Tamia to the world. Jones released the song as a single in 1995, and it was nominated for a Grammy Award. Later that year, Tamia participated in another collaboration, "Missing You", a single from the Set It Off soundtrack that also featured singers Brandy, Chaka Khan, and Gladys Knight. The song was also nominated for a Grammy Award.
After appearing on Quincy Jones' album on the songs You Put A Move On My Heart and Slow Jams (with Babyface), and signing with Quincy's Qwest label, Tamia immediately ventured into the music world, singing the hit song Missing You (from the movie Set It Off) with Brandy, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan. She also sings on LL Cool J's new Phenomenon album. Last summer, Tamia tried her hand at acting by landing a supporting role in the movie Speed 2: Cruise Control, acting opposite Jason Patric and Sandra Bullock. She has appeared as a guest and presenter at award shows such as the Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and the Soul Train Awards.
She carefully crafted her debut album over the course of 1996 and 1997, taking time out to play a small role in Speed II: Cruise Control in 1997; she also sang "Make Tonight Beautiful" for the soundtrack. Tamia finally released her debut album, Tamia, in April 1998. The album boasted an impressive list of collaborators and producers, including Jermaine Dupri, Keith Crouch, Tim Kellyand Bob Robinson, Stevie J., Mario Winans, and Quincy Jones. Two years later and newly signed to Elektra, Tamia released her sophomore effort, A Nu Day, featuring production collaborations from Missy Elliott, Dallas Austin, and Shep Crawford. The single "Stranger in My House" became a surprise Top Ten hit in 2001. More (2004) and Between Friends (2006) followed.
Kelly Price
Throughout her career Kelly has sung for, recorded with, toured with, wrote songs for, arranged and produced music for George Michael, Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Brian McKnight, LL Cool J, Ben Tankard, Mary J Blige, Puff Daddy, Brandy, The LOX, Donnie McClurkin, The Williams Brothers, Faith Evans, Karen Clarke-Sheard, Yolanda Adams, MASE, Whitney Houston, Mary, The Notorious B.I.G, Richard Smallwood, R. Kelly, Eric Clapton, Wynona Judd, Gerald Levert, Angela Winbush, The Isley Bros and the legendary Ronald Isley just to name a few.
Though many record labels initially pursued Kelly as a recording artist it was her connection with Isley and his relentless persistence that convinced her to begin to use her musical talents for herself resulting in a formal alliance between Isley and Price that birthed her solo career with the album Soul of A Woman in 1998 that featured the #1 smash women's anthem of the year "Friend of Mine", penned by Ms Kelly Price. She would follow with the platinum success of Mirror in 2000, One Family: A Christmas Album in 2002 and the critically acclaimed Priceless in 2003.
Out of the box Ms Price was a trendsetter and broke records by reaching Billboard's top spot twice with the same song and having achieved that initial # 1 victory with no music video at television. This had never been done by any artist since the format of music videos became the major marketing method by which record companies promote and sell music.
