#BREAKING Facebook is DOWN all over #Africa. See why I left the social network July 3rd 2015 #hnntech

Facebook is down. The social network posted this message at 11.51am West African time.

"Facebook Will Be Back Soon
Facebook is down for required maintenance right now, but you should be able to get back on within a few minutes. In the meantime, read more about why you're seeing this message. Thanks for your patience as we improve the site."

Meanwhile those minutes turned to hours. I am no longer on Facebook as of the 3rd of July 2015 due to refusal of the social network to fix numerous problems on my pages since 2009. They thank you and make it a mass message saying they can't reply everyone. My fanpage had over 30,000 people while my personal page had 5012.

#HNNTech Ahhhh 31 years of Microsoft Windows. Look @Billgates here

Moment in time: Nov. 10, 1983 - Microsoft launches Windows 1.0

Computer users were living in a world of DOS: square black screens with green or orange font that could only display letters and numbers in response to basic C: commands. This wasn't just a world without e-mails, tweets and Instagram - this was a world before start menus. So when Bill Gates unveiled a new operating system called Windows 1.0, people braced for a big overhaul. For $99 (U.S.), the software would be able to run multiple programs at once - things such as a notepad, calendar, clock and Windows Paint. Gates promised Windows would be compatible with 90 per cent of IBM computers. There was one small catch: The software wouldn't ship for two more years. Windows customers would have to learn to be patient - a virtue often practised since that day. -- Amberly McAteer

#HNNtech #HNNHealth #EBOLA text message system to expand

Text message

The operators of a text-message-based system used to advise people about Ebola in Sierra Leone aim to extend it to seven other West African nations.

The facility allows the Red Cross and Red Crescent charities to send SMS messages to every switched-on handset in a specific area by drawing its shape on a computer-generated map.

It also automatically sends back appropriate replies to incoming texts.

The charities say they hope to complete the expansion within nine months.

However, they will first require the co-operation of local mobile networks and authorities.

"It's been doing an excellent job in Sierra Leone, sending out in the region of 2 million messages per month, helping the communities there to prepare themselves, try to avoid getting infected, and then if they do, to know what to do about it," explained Robin Burton from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

#HNNTech Was Your Dropbox account HACKED? Maybe you should GET RID of it!

God, I'm totally confused on what cloud stotage to use these days. Now Dropbox has been compromised says TechCrunch

After last week’s Snapchat photo hack, it’s cloud storage provider Dropbox’s turn in the unsavory insecurity spotlight. An anonymous Pastebin user has claimed to have compromised almost seven million Dropbox account credentials (emails and passwords), posting the first 400 direct to Pastebin with a call for Bitcoin donations to leak more.

This leak has since been followed up with a couple more pastes (of around a hundred account credentials apiece). However these follow up pastes do not appear to be genuine. In an update to a blog post about the attack Dropbox notes: “A subsequent list of usernames and passwords has been posted online. We’ve checked and these are not associated with Dropbox accounts.”

As with the Snapchat hack, Dropbox has pointed the finger of blame for the 400 compromised accounts elsewhere — at “unrelated” third party services — stressing that its own security has not been compromised.

However unlike Snapchat it appears services using Dropbox’s API were not to blame here. Rather the culprit looks like password reuse across other web services.

In a post on the company Blog – unequivocally entitled ‘Dropbox wasn’t hacked‘ — Dropbox’s Anton Mityagin writes:

Recent news articles claiming that Dropbox was hacked aren’t true. Your stuff is safe. The usernames and passwords referenced in these articles were stolen from unrelated services, not Dropbox. Attackers then used these stolen credentials to try to log in to sites across the internet, including Dropbox. We have measures in place to detect suspicious login activity and we automatically reset passwords when it happens.

Attacks like these are one of the reasons why we strongly encourage users not to reuse passwords across services. For an added layer of security, we always recommendenabling 2 step verification on your account.

In an earlier statement given to The Next Web the company also noted that it had “previously detected these attacks”, adding that “the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now”:

Dropbox has not been hacked. These usernames and passwords were unfortunately stolen from other services and used in attempts to log in to Dropbox accounts. We’d previously detected these attacks and the vast majority of the passwords posted have been expired for some time now. All other remaining passwords have been expired as well.

It’s unclear exactly which other website(s) or service(s) is the source of the security breach. But Dropbox’s statement confirms the initially posted credentials are — or rather were — genuine account logins for its service. Albeit now reset.

If it’s a case of simple password cross pollination (i.e. web users reusing the same login credentials) across multiple services then Dropbox’s claim that its servers have not been hacked does technically stand up. However the end result — user accounts compromised — is the same.

Requiring users to enable an additional step aimed at safeguarding their accounts from these types of attacks, such as enforcing two step authentication, would result in more robust protection from this type of password hack. But obviously requiring that step would add an additional layer of complexity for users. Hence the ongoing tug of war between security and convenience.

Dropbox was in the news earlier this week after coming under fire from NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden as “hostile to privacy”. He warned web users that Dropbox does not safeguard their privacy because it holds encryption keys and can therefore be forced by governments to hand over the data they store on its servers. He suggested people get rid of Dropbox and use alternative cloud storage providers that do not hold any encryption keys, such as SpiderOak.

#HNNTech Samsung launches $20 Power Sharing cable for charging micro USB devices with your Galaxy phone or tablet

Samsung today launched a new accessory for its Galaxy line of products that isn’t just a gimmick but looks extremely useful: meet the Samsung Power Sharing cable for $19.99. In short, the cable lets you use select Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets to charge your other micro USB devices.

Samsung lists the following compatible devices for being able to share power: Galaxy S 5, Galaxy Tab S 10.5, Galaxy Tab S 8.4, Galaxy Alpha, Galaxy Avant, and Galaxy Note 4. Thus if you bought a Galaxy device this year, you’re good to go. As for receiving power, Samsung promises that the cable is compatible with “any device that can be charged via Micro USB cable” (that means smartphones and tablets, but also wearables and Bluetooth headsets).

The company does warn that there are limitations to the process, which requires Samsung’s Power Sharing app for Android. The full battery amount on your Galaxy device “cannot be transferred due to power loss or usage during the transfer process.” Nonetheless, if you can’t find a power outlet, and you don’t have a spare battery, this cable turns your Galaxy device into a savior.

#HNNTech Photo-sharing app TwitPic shutting down, blame Twitter

A Twitpic photo of a US Airways flight that landed in the Hudson River went viral on Twitter in 2009.

The company that "changed everything" for Twitter is shutting down ... because of Twitter.

Photo-sharing service Twitpic will be no more as of later this month. The application, which launched in 2008, allows users to upload pictures, videos and GIFs to share across the social web.

In a blog post, Twitpic founder Noah Everett says the "unexpected and hard announcement" is a result of Twitter's request that Twitpic abandon its trademark application. Since Twitpic does not have "the resources to fend off a large company like Twitter," Everett writes, it has decided to shut down.

Long before Twitter gave users the ability to upload media to its micro-blogging site, Twitpic was the preferred application by users to share their pictures. In fact, Twitter's turning point came about as a result of a photo shared via Twitpic.

When U.S. Airways Flight 1549 touched down on the frigid waters in the Hudson River on Jan. 15, 2009, Twitter, for many, was just a funny word in the dictionary.

#HNNTech Google Removes 'Bomb Gaza' Game From App Store After Public Outcry

View image on Twitter

Any garbage sells in the world of video games. From Grand Theft Auto to the now pulled Bomb Gaza game. We even have time to create video games with #Blindhatred

Google on Monday removed from its Play Store a downloadable game called “Bomb Gaza” that simulated Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip. The move came after a flurry of outraged comments posted to Google’s app store review page and elsewhere. The game had been downloaded about 1,000 times since its July 29 launch, according to Britain's Guardian newspaper.

"Bomb Gaza," developed by PlayFTW, was still available Monday on Facebook. The game simulates the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Islamist group Hamas, which dominates the Palestinian territory. Players drop bombs from a fighter jet while dodging missiles from Hamas fighters in black and green masks. "We remove apps from Google Play that violate our policies," a Google spokesperson said in a statement to NBC News. Google has rules that prohibit content that amounts to hate speech, bullying and violence and lets users flag abusive content.

HNNAfrica learned that Google also removed a second game, “Gaza Assault: Code Red,” which allowed users to target terrorist cells hidden within Gaza.

#HNNCrime Pakistani woman and 2 Girls KILLED by MOB over a Blasphemous Facebook Post #HNNTech

ISLAMABAD, July 28 (Reuters) - A Pakistani mob killed a woman member of a religious sect and two of her granddaughters after a sect member was accused of posting blasphemous material on Facebook, police said Monday, the latest instance of growing violence against minorities.

The dead, including a seven-year-old girl and her baby sister, were Ahmadis, who consider themselves Muslim but believe in a prophet after Mohammed. A 1984 Pakistani law declared them non-Muslims and many Pakistanis consider them heretics.

Police said the late Sunday violence in the town of Gujranwala, 220 km (140 miles) southeast of the capital, Islamabad, started with an altercation between young men, one of whom was an Ahmadi accused of posting "objectionable material".

"Later, a crowd of 150 people came to the police station demanding the registration of a blasphemy case against the accused," said one police officer who declined to be identified.

"As police were negotiating with the crowd, another mob attacked and started burning the houses of Ahmadis."

The youth accused of making the Facebook post had not been injured, he said.

Under Pakistani law, Ahmadis are banned from using Muslim greetings, saying Muslim prayers or referring to his place of worship as a mosque.

Salim ud Din, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community, said it was the worst attack on the community since simultaneous attacks on Ahmadi places of worship killed 86 Ahmadis four years ago.

"Police were there but just watching the burning. They didn't do anything to stop the mob," he said. "First they looted their homes and shops and then they burnt the homes."

The police officer said they had tried to stop the mob.

Accusations of blasphemy are rocketing in Pakistan, from one in 2011 to at least 68 last year, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. About 100 people have been accused of blasphemy this year.

Human rights workers say the accusations are increasingly used to settle personal vendettas or to grab the property of the accused. (Additional reporting, writing by Katharine Houreld; Editing by Robert Birsel)
