WHAT IS THE TRUE DEFINITION OF A GODFATHER? THE CONTROVERSY HAS ALREADY BEGUN ALL OVER TORONTO. INZANE OF THE REAL FREQUENCY WRITES ME WITH THIS.......
god-fa-ther [god-fah-ther]
1. A man who serves as sponsor for a child at baptism.
2. Any male sponsor or guardian.
3. (often initial capital letter) a powerful leader, esp. of the Mafia.
4. A person who is regarded as the originator or principal shaper of a movement,
school of thought, art form, industry, or the like: the godfather of abstract expressionism. verb (used with object)
5. To act as godfather to; be sponsor or protector for. Definitions 1, 2 and 5 do not factor into this, so let's focus on 3 and especially 4 for the rest of this story.
On Sunday's MuchMusic Video Awards Ottawa rapper Belly was introduced as the "Godfather of Canadian Hip Hop" *pause*. Read that last sentence again. That's right Godfather. Some around these parts may take offense to such a statement, our man Ty Harper, who filled in for Arcee on Monday's show, was one. If we use description #4, we can clearly see, Belly, who was not even born when Hip Hop was introduced to Canada, doesn't quite squeeze into the XXL shirt. Godfather is a powerful statement, only an originator can hold that moniker. Originating or shaping a movement has nothing to do with record sales, video's or awards. Making a statement like that is disrespectful to those have laid the groundwork for you to attain such things. Maybe we're over-reacting, maybe it was meant as #3, the cliche Hip Hop persona. Mob boss. That's original. Maybe he is an originator.
Shout out to the true Godfather of Canadian Hip Hop: Ron Nelson.
Arcee is back and The New North resumes next week with producers Tone Mason. -Inzane

Unfortunately, I could not ask Belly that question as I did not see him at the Pressroom at his scheduled time or he came earlier before I got there. He was at the MMVA's though.
