SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has denied his planned performance at a festival in Quebec City, Canada, will evoke painful memories of Britain's conquest of New France. The British musician says Quebec nationalists should "smoke the pipes of peace" over their opposition to his free concert celebrating the city's 400th anniversary on 20 July (08). He insists his forthcoming performance should not be deemed political and nationalists should overlook Britain's historical links with New France, which include Quebec.
He says, "I think it's time to smoke the pipes of peace and to just, you know, put away your hatchet because I think it's a show of friendship. "Come on Quebec-ins (Quebecers), love me baby."
