OK, this guys tell us their office is in the hood and as I went into the hood on Martin Luther King Blvd, the nice downtown scenery started to change into the ghetto and yes I was in the hood. The one address that is supposed to be Big Oomp Records headquarters turned out to be just that. These guys are still in the hood….but why? After all their success. They told me that that is where they came from and that is where they will remain. I met with the CEO of Big Oomp Records who is Big OOMP himself. DJ Jelly, DJ Montay, MC Assault, Intoxicated, Baby D, D.R.U. OOmp says he started this record empire in 1990.

He sold mixed tapes in the gas stations, parks, subways and eventually became a figure in the music business. He expressed his hate for the bootleggers who knock business down. He told me 4 stores closed out of his 10 record stores. Big Oomp is an umbrella company. They have Top Quality music production and publishing company. He also has a TV show “Live wit the OOmp Camp” that comes on at 2am on UPN-69 which most Atlantans know is very popular hosted by DJ Jelly and Baby D. They manufacture and sell their own fruit flavored airfreshner for $5 each. Orders come from all over the country.

You’ll find this concentrated scent in every room in my house. The Southern style DJ’s mix tapes are popular in this region. A clothing line is out there with T-shirts, sweat shirts etc. There is a hair salon called Big Oomp hair gallery and he promised me a treatment when I’m ready. This guy Big Oomp started a lot of trends in this town that so many artists and entrepreneurs have bitten off him and he never got credit for it. Big Oomp was a highly recommended interview. We met Baby D in the clubs and he actually told us about Big Oomp records.

He’s on the 3rd album going now. They put the first 2 out on the independent label. Baby D has one Source awards, videos on BET, MTV and several music and industry trade magazines

We know about his famous Step daddy video on BET and MTV with John Witherspoon. He is working on some new stuff which will be his 3^rd album

DJ Jelly

The biggest DJ thru the Midwest and South since 1990. His mix tapes are all over the country and they have a syndicated show in 25 radio stations, one near here at Foxy in Macon. They have mix DVD’s too which is music mixed in music videos. I don’t know how they do it but it is hot!

Loco is working on a project too and has Get buck off. Intoxicated has the song Walk it and they are working on those 2 getting signed with Def Jam.

Promotions is a family job. Farad Shaid , Voo Doo, Big Fella and even DJ Jelly do a lot of promotions. The Road Manager is Big Fella. BF gets promotions going on by staying on the streets, keep a good relationship with the radio stations and the mom and pops stores and the key is staying and popping into the hood in different cities. I got a chance to carry plaques, gold and platinum records actually grabbing them off the walls to photograph.

DJ Jelly has broken a lot of artists out here. Ludacris, Lil John, Ying Yang Twins and many more. We asked him for parental advice for parent-managers and he told us that some parents can get in the way of critical industry people and always ask questions. Why are you still in the hood. He said he’s connected in the hood even if he is 500 million dollars rich. Where is the million dollar house? He said he stays in that one. (LOL) Big Fella said they just came back from this southern states tour and they are touring untouched markets.

Open Mike time he reminded people to watch the show on UPN which is a top 10 countdown of music videos. They have 6 record stores, South Cobb Dr, Ralph Abernathy, Candler rd Flea market, Cambelton rd, Old National Parkway, XM Satellite Channel Wed 10.30pm the Raw Channel with DJ Jelly. They are also dejaying in the hottest clubs in the metro area. They have a track on Lil Flip’s album, 2 tracks on Pastor Troy, one on Young blood, Crimemob, 2 on Lil Scrappy, one on Rashida. Lil C will be dropping, DRU a new artist who is a white rapper in Georgia State 3.9 GPA, Loco, Major Bank, Baby D, Slim J, DJ Jelly is dropping another album. They work with so many, Ludacris, T.I, YY Twins David Banner, Bone Crusher, Pastor Troy, MJG and 8 ball, Gangsta Boo, too Short, Big Boi, and many more. This will be their first album. This was the BEST MUSIC INTERVIEW IN MY CAREER!!!
