Big Oomp and company are my boys down in the ATL! I did an exclusive with them in 2004.
Big Oomp Records

OK, this guys tell us their office is in the hood and as I went into the hood on Martin Luther King Blvd, the nice downtown scenery started to change into the ghetto and yes I was in the hood. The one address that is supposed to be Big Oomp Records headquarters turned out to be just that. These guys are still in the hood….but why? After all their success. They told me that that is where they came from and that is where they will remain. I met with the CEO of Big Oomp Records who is Big OOMP himself. DJ Jelly, DJ Montay, MC Assault, Intoxicated, Baby D, D.R.U. OOmp says he started this record empire in 1990.
He sold mixed tapes in the gas stations, parks, subways and eventually became a figure in the music business. He expressed his hate for the bootleggers who knock business down. He told me 4 stores closed out of his 10 record stores. Big Oomp is an umbrella company. They have Top Quality music production and publishing company. He also has a TV show “Live wit the OOmp Camp” that comes on at 2am on UPN-69 which most Atlantans know is very popular hosted by DJ Jelly and Baby D. They manufacture and sell their own fruit flavored airfreshner for $5 each. Orders come from all over the country.
You’ll find this concentrated scent in every room in my house. The Southern style DJ’s mix tapes are popular in this region. A clothing line is out there with T-shirts, sweat shirts etc. There is a hair salon called Big Oomp hair gallery and he promised me a treatment when I’m ready. This guy Big Oomp started a lot of trends in this town that so many artists and entrepreneurs have bitten off him and he never got credit for it. Big Oomp was a highly recommended interview. We met Baby D in the clubs and he actually told us about Big Oomp records.
Baby-D
He’s on the 3rd album going now. They put the first 2 out on the independent label. Baby D has one Source awards, videos on BET, MTV and several music and industry trade magazines
Sammy Sam
We know about his famous Step daddy video on BET and MTV with John Witherspoon. He is working on some new stuff which will be his 3rd album
DJ Jelly
The biggest DJ thru the Midwest and South since 1990. His mix tapes are all over the country and they have a syndicated show in 25 radio stations, one near here at Foxy in Macon. They have mix DVD’s too which is music mixed in music videos. I don’t know how they do it but it is hot!
Loco is working on a project too and has Get buck off. Intoxicated has the song Walk it and they are working on those 2 getting signed with Def Jam.
Promotions is a family job. Farad Shaid , Voo Doo, Big Fella and even DJ Jelly do a lot of promotions. The Road Manager is Big Fella. BF gets promotions going on by staying on the streets, keep a good relationship with the radio stations and the mom and pops stores and the key is staying and popping into the hood in different cities. I got a chance to carry plaques, gold and platinum records actually grabbing them off the walls to photograph.
DJ Jelly has broken a lot of artists out here. Ludacris, Lil John, Ying Yang Twins and many more. We asked him for parental advice for parent-managers and he told us that some parents can get in the way of critical industry people and always ask questions. Why are you still in the hood. He said he’s connected in the hood even if he is 500 million dollars rich. Where is the million dollar house? He said he stays in that one. (LOL) Big Fella said they just came back from this southern states tour and they are touring untouched markets.
Open Mike time he reminded people to watch the show on UPN which is a top 10 countdown of music videos. They have 6 record stores, South Cobb Dr, Ralph Abernathy, Candler rd Flea market, Cambelton rd, Old National Parkway, XM Satellite Channel Wed 10.30pm the Raw Channel with DJ Jelly. They are also dejaying in the hottest clubs in the metro area. They have a track on Lil Flip’s album, 2 tracks on Pastor Troy, one on Young blood, Crimemob, 2 on Lil Scrappy, one on Rashida. Need tracks? Call 404-7584210 1079 MLK Drive, Suite 2AtlantaGA30314P.O. Box 42963, AtlantaGA30311
Lil C will be dropping, DRU a new artist who is a white rapper in Georgia State 3.9 GPA, Loco, Major Bank, Baby D, Slim J, DJ Jelly is dropping another album. They work with so many, Ludacris, T.I, YY Twins David Banner, Bone Crusher, Pastor Troy, MJG and 8 ball, Gangsta Boo, too Short, Big Boi, and many more. This will be their first album. This was the BEST MUSIC INTERVIEW IN MY CAREER!!!
He spoke to me on July 1st Canada day, our Independence day last month and we talked about everything that has to be addressed. Shawty Lo is a very independent, vibrant hip-hop artist with his album "Units in the City." He talked about his own label Asylum records and even reflected on D4L his former record label pals. We talked about the "Foolish remix" and I demanded Shawty to sing me part of "Dey Know" and I swooned on the phone line. He goes..... "sing it to you....?" Listen to how he laughed at that point on the audio.
We talked about his controversial appearance at Hot 107.9FM's annual birthday bash which is an annual radio station concert gig. This was the one where T.I supposedly dissed him and the beef began. Shawty does not sound like a beef monger to me. He used and still performs in the parking lot of a neighborhood supermarket called Super Giant in Bankhead. This community service has bought out community members of all ages and even leaders as Shawty takes care of everyone in Bankhead. I can safely compare Bankhead to Regents Park. Many are underprivileged and trying to succeed everyday while seeing drug dealing, shootings and other crimes in the hood. The supermarket gig has now become a commercial center where people can get FREE diabetic testing, kids get face painting, free snacks and more. He said he himself is diabetic and wanted to give back to the community on staying healthy. I agree he is a POSITIVE role model for the young ones.
He says he wants to get into ventures too. Clothing lines, drinks, movies, sitcoms and any other ventures out there related to the hip-hop culture. He also says JAY-Z (Shawn Carter) is his IDOL and his dream collaboration partner! He also says he has not worked with Producer Jermaine Dupri yet when I asked him about collaborations and music production. The BIG question was about T.I (Clifford Harris) and Shawty stated that he is the KING, PERIOD! Need I say more he says if T.I feels like he's a King, then he's one but NOT his KING!"I'm a leader not a follower" he said. Shawty wants you to know that!!!
He was nominated for 5 OZONE awards and the awards were given out last week in Houston, Texas. He won the BEST BREAKTHROUGH ARTIST!
A tour bus carrying hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg was pulled over and two people were arrested on marijuana possession charges Thursday a few hours before a concert in Dallas, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety said.
Snoop and his entourage need to move over here to Canaba!
Legendary hip-hop icon DR. DRE is finally satisfied with the quality of his long-awaited DETOX album - and is aiming to release it by the end of the year (08). The LP is the rap mogul's first album in nine years, following the 1999 release of his disc 2001. And the perfectionist is now happy for fans to hear the CD in its entirety. He tells newspaper USA Today, "I'm just now - over the last couple of months - starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it. "In a perfect world, I'm shooting for a November or December release."
Dre, real name Andre Young, admits the long hiatus in between albums is unintentional - although he has no plans as yet for a fourth solo release after Detox. He says, "I've never set out to do that (release albums years apart). I just make the music feel the way I want it to feel and I don't put it out until I'm totally happy with it. Then it does what it does." He adds, "I'm going to put this record out, promote it, tour and then become a hermit. I'm going to stay in the studio and produce."
Rapper LIL' ROMEO has passed up a starring role in new movie SWEETWATER, so he doesn't lose his college basketball eligibility. The hitmaker, real name Romeo Miller, will start playing for the University of Southern California later this year (08) - and when he does, he'll have to abide by strict college athlete rules. That means the 18-year-old has to be a full-time student and can not accept hand-outs or cash favours from potential sponsors, agents or professionals. In Sweetwater, Miller was set to portray the first African American player signed by America's National Basketball Association.
The teenager's father, rap mogul Master P, says, "Romeo has agreed to abide by all NCAA regulations, but I think a lot of their rules will need to be updated to take into account a person of his magnitude and his past accomplishments. "I couldn't be more proud of my son's decision to choose education and athletics over money. Being a student athlete takes a lot of hard work and discipline." Lil' Romeo insists his father has taught him to get his head down at college and learn as well as play: "Being raised in poverty-stricken New Orleans, I know first hand what it's like to have nothing, and to see what my dad has done with his education, goals, and opportunities has really opened my eyes.
My baby Romeo is legal now so he can plant that kiss on my cheeks. That's what I told uncle C-Murder during my interview with C. Stay tuned for that compelling interview....
I really don't care who this Meatball or Meatloaf character is who allegedly says he beat up Shawty Lo. Fock all the haters in that ATL! All I know is Shawty told me there is only one King and boy, I can't wait to play you all that interview I did with him via phone on July 2nd 2008! They are just trying to spark something that's not there between him and T.I. Shawty supports his community and some of these wannabe's DON'T! Now to the GOOD NEWS!
5 NOMINATIONS FOR SHAWTY LO!
Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo received five nominations for Ozone Magazine's third annual Ozone Awards show, which will be held in Houston, TX, August 8th-11th. The Bankhead representer picked up nods in the categories of Breakthrough Artist, Club Banger of the Year for "Dey Know", Best Mixtape/Street Album for the DJ Scream-assisted "I'm Da Man 2", Mixtape Monster Award and Best Rap Album for his solo debut "Units In The City" (D4L Records/Asylum). Says Shawty Lo about his multiple nominations, "I'm very honored to be nominated and appreciate the recognition and all of the support. It's been a long time coming and a lot of hard work but it's all paying off."
Rocker TOMMY LEE has become an environmental task master at home after hosting new green show BATTLEGROUND EARTH with rapper LUDACRIS. The two stars spent months visiting eco-warriors throughout the U.S. in a bid to live greener lives and the experience has had a huge effect on the drummer. As well as planting an eco-friendly new lawn outside his California home, Lee is teaching his sons to be more resourceful.
At first, Tiffany Lussier brushed it off when she heard rumours reggae mega-star Sean Paul would make a surprise visit to her summer basketball camp. The 11-year-old broke out in tears of joy Wednesday when Paul showed up and she was asked to sing with the Grammy Award-winning artist in front of her fellow campers. "When the people said he would come, I thought it wasn't true and they were just joking. . . I never thought in my life that I would see him," Lussier said. Paul dropped by to offer advice about life to several hundred campers who listened intently while sitting on the huge gymnasium floor at Montreal's Dawson College.
I just love it when these hip-hop stars remember these children. I know he's extraordinarily busy but I've told this to Jay-Z to visit these youth spots more often. If he can tell them about his 1999 stabbing trial, they will learn from it! SEAN PERFORMS TONIGHT AT 7PM IN TORONTO ALONG WITH AKON, KARDINAL AND WYCLEF.
Basically about one of our Southern DJ's "DJ Montay" who himself is big right now. To my shock, on the credits I noticed that Montay PRODUCED "Low!" I called Big OOOMP about that last week and congratulated him. Montay is with Big Oomp records and camp. That is the label that runs the South! I will run the interview I did with Oomp and his pals in 2004 in ATL when my studio computer gets here.
Rapper THE GAME has been "subliminally" insulting JAY-Z on his records - in a bizarre bid to get the hip-hop mogul to work with him. The Dreams hitmaker took shots at Jay-Z via his music on tracks like It's Okay (One Blood), after hearing a freestyle the 99 Problems star made that The Game thought was aimed at him. It turned out to be a misunderstanding, but The Game is glad it happened because Jay-Z has now acknowledged his presence in the rap game. And he hopes their lyrical exchange will lead to them hooking up in the studio. He says, "Even though me and (Jay-Z) don't talk or do songs, he knows. He listens.
"He heard the 'You're 38, and you're still rappin', ugh' (from It's Okay (One Blood)). He came back on 'Kingdom Come' and I was like, 'Yeah! Jay listens to my s**t! (When Jay said) 'I used to think that rapping at 38 was ill / Till last year I grossed about 38 mill.' I was like, 'I know who he is talkin' to. I know he listens. I know his antenna's up.' "Maybe one day he'll do a song with me, and then I'll stop shooting subliminals."
On the eve of celebrating the solo debut of his artist Blood Raw, CTE Records founder and multi-platinum Def Jam artist Young Jeezyis releasing a new mixtape. The Prime Minister, which will be available for free download starting Saturday (Jun 14), is to serve as a prequel to Jeezy’s highly anticipated third album, due out later this year.
Looks like Jeezy is thinking the Canadian way! "The Prime Minister" heh? That's my boy above when I first discovered him at the Hot 107.9FM Summer Jam of 2004 when he was hawking his demo and shirts from the car. Ironically today is the 2008 HOT 107.9FM Atlanta Summer Jam! and the Jeezster is a PERFORMER! Look at him now!
