Sickle Cell Anemia is a very problematic and common disease in Nigeria especially in Northern Nigeria where the gene is so prevalent and their is almost zero education. The daughter of our President Zahra Buhari is now an Ambassador for it and educating her people as well as the whole country via her mom's NGO. Zahra lost her half sister 5 years ago. As a US trained Pharmacist, Journalist and Public Relations Specialist, I do my best educating less privileged Nigerians.

During the 2014 Easter weekend, Nigerians read a post on Facebook that was quite tragic. Politician and well known Nigerian government official Nasir El Rufai now a Governor in Kaduna state disclosed that he lost his daughter that Easter Sunday to the complications of Sickle Cell Anemia. Previously in 2012, Former Nigerian leader General Buhari (now our leader again as President Buhari) also lost his daughter Zulai to a similar complication of Sickle Cell Anemia during childbirth, both Northern Nigerians.

The fact is that Most Nigerians need to learn more about Sickle Cell Anemia which is a disease that must be properly managed and needs tremendous education in. The Sickle Cell gene and the trait need to be discussed with families possessing them as it may affect future offspring and their lives. In modern countries, Doctors even tell pregnant mothers to terminate pregnancies due to these risk factors.

Sickle Cell Anemia is an inherited disorder that affects mostly black people. Red blood cells become crescent-shaped because of a genetic defect. They break down rapidly, so oxygen does not get to the body's organs, causing Anemia. The crescent-shaped red blood can cells also get stuck in tiny blood vessels, causing pain

It has some tremendous abilities to cause many complications in different aspects of life even though most of those complications are more visible when the patient has what is known as a “crises” when the symptoms escalate to almost life or death proportions.

In the case of Zulai, President Buhari’s daughter, it was reported that she was in the process of childbirth when she allegedly had the crises before she passed away delivering a healthy baby girl. As tragic as that may sound, childbirth involves the loss of a lot of blood and there may be a need for transfusion in a sickle cell patient. This brings me to the

Many Nigerians still unfairly assume that elite Nigerians in politics always have to fly their families abroad before getting quality care. Here are two situations where two high ranking political officials lost daughters to this deadly disease on Nigerian soil.

Though Sickle cell is limited to mostly people in the black race, it does not discriminate based on socio-economic status. It just needs education especially within our Nigerian communities that are not as literate, educated or live in poverty and have no access to good health care.

Complications that the US Center for Disease Control say patient and health care givers should monitor closely include Stroke which can occur if sickle cells block blood flow to an area of your brain. Signs of stroke include seizures, weakness or numbness of your arms and legs, sudden speech difficulties, and loss of consciousness. If your baby or child has any of these signs and symptoms, seek medical treatment immediately.

A stroke can be fatal. Acute chest syndrome is a life-threatening complication of sickle cell anemia causes chest pain, fever and difficulty breathing. Acute chest syndrome can be caused by a lung infection or by sickle cells blocking blood vessels in your lungs. It may require emergency medical treatment with antibiotics and other treatments.

Pulmonary hypertension is when sickle cell anemia patients develop high blood pressure in their lungs (pulmonary hypertension). Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing are common symptoms of this condition, which can be fatal. Organ damage where Sickle cells can block blood flow through blood vessels, immediately depriving an organ of blood and oxygen. In sickle cell anemia, blood is also chronically low on oxygen. Chronic deprivation of oxygen-rich blood can damage nerves and organs in your body, including your kidneys, liver and spleen. Organ damage can be fatal. Blindness, skin ulcers and also gallstones are also common.

Kuwait City, Monday October 17, 2016 – Today’s Board of Trustees meeting of the Al-Sumait Prize for African Development honored ground-breaking research on tackling childhood malaria and addressing undernourishment through Africa, which both impact the lives of ten millions of children across the continent.

The Board awarded the 2015 Al-Sumait Prize for Health to Professor Kevin Marsh, from the University of Oxford and African Academy of Sciences, Kenya, for his sustained efforts to control and eradicate malaria, which impacts the health of tens of millions of African children.

The 2016 Al-Sumait Prize for Food Security honored two organizations The Sweet Potato for Nutrition Team International Potato Centre, Peru, in advancing the contribution of sweet potato to African farmers and households to address Vitamin A deficiency, one of the most pernicious forms of undernourishment, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Nigeria, for its work in improving the yields and nutritional quality of major staple food crops, such as cassava, banana and maize.

Al-Sumait’s Board is chaired by H.E. Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Kuwait’s First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The awards were instigated on the initiative of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al- Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait.

With each award worth one million dollars and a gold medal, Al-Sumait awards are administered by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and a Board of Trustees who oversee the selection of the recipients. The awards acknowledge the work of the late Dr. Abdulrahman Al-Sumait, a Kuwaiti doctor who dedicated his life to addressing the development challenges confronting Africa and established the Direct Aid humanitarian organization.

The winning laureates will receive their awards from the Amir of the State of Kuwait and the President of Equatorial Guinea during a ceremony at the Fourth Arab African Summit in Equatorial Guinea on November 22, 2016.

Americans especially children have a lot of cases of ADHD and they are treated with stimulants like Adderall, Ritalin and more. Below is her tweet and she received a lot of bravery support. I'm a US trained pharmacist and also started journalism as a music journalist. L'il Wayne has been known for drinking Promethazine cough syrup like alcohol, something that is common in the music industry and called sirrzup.

Rapper Pimp C died of Tussionex overdose another powerful cough syrup. Promethazine has been the cause of most of Wayne's seizures. He tweeted yesterday that he's done with something. He didn't exactly say MUSIC. I hope it's the cough syrup abuse. Most people online think he's quitting music. he even thanked the Miami Police department for guarding his concerts attentively and told fans he did not want sympathy but serenity.

Stella Oduah's son's DEATH: Know your Rights in a WRONGFUL Medical Lawsuit? #HNNHealth

None of us want to ever bury a child or any loved one. Senator Stella Oduah is a Nigerian Senator whose son was KILLED recently in what many heard was a medical error. I am a Pharmacist aside from being a Journalist. Medication errors are a great liability case and there must be legal action taken.

Stella Oduah’s son, Maxwell Omabuwa Chinedu Etoromi, died after suffering a brain hemorrhage secondary to a wrong medication I heard was given to him after a tooth was pulled. He suffered a fatal end and deserves justice.

In a modern country, you hire a lawyer to represent your interest and the same should be done in Nigeria. Mrs Oduah should not leave anything to chance and must pursue legal action. I pray that she gets damages out of this. It will not bring her son back but will send a message to our weak dangerous health sector. Rest in Peace to her beloved son. This is truly a tragedy.

US Senators Demand Answers from EpiPen Maker #HNNHealth

The Epi-Pen scandal continues. A group of 20 senators expressed their continued dissatisfaction with pharmaceutical company Mylan's handling of a price hike for their EpiPen product in a letter to the company's CEO.

Having come under fire in recent weeks for unprecedented price hikes of the EpiPen, Mylan has announced coupons and generic versions of the drug. But the group of Democrat senators, which includes Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, remain unconvinced.

"Your discount programs, however, represent a well-defined industry tactic to keep costs high through a complex shell game," the senators wrote. They elaborated that the high price of the drug would now be borne by the government, insurance companies, and workplaces, only to eventually increase premiums of those purchasing the drugs.

"The EpiPen ... has become so exorbitantly expensive that access to this life-saving combination product is in jeopardy for many Americans. As of May 2016, Mylan has increased the price of EpiPens in the United States by nearly 500 percent," the letter stated.

It noted the generic drug, which will be sold at $300, costs nearly three times as much as the branded version did just seven years ago. The letter also includes five pages of questions about Mylan's customers and costs, to which the senators demanded answers by September 12.

EpiPens are used to treat anaphylactic shock, a symptom of severe allergies often experienced by children that could lead to death.

Sarah Jessica Parker, who was previously part of a campaign with Mylan, has a 13-year-old son that suffers from severe peanut and hazelnut allergies. “I hope they will seriously reconsider the outpouring of voices of those millions of people who are dependent on the device, and take swift action to lower the cost to be more affordable for whom it is a life-saving necessity," she wrote.

In response to the firestorm, the drugmaker announced Thursday it would offer discounts for the EpiPen, including coupons covering up to $300 "for patients in health plans who face higher out-of-pocket costs."

As a US trained Pharmacist, it is an outrageous price hike and there is just no excuse for it.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is probing Mylan due to concerns over pricing. The Center for Responsive Politics reported that Mylan's PAC and employees donated $60,750 to Manchin between 2011-2016. So she's the Senator's daughter. It's a huge conflict of interest. As a Pharmacist in the USA, how can Epi-Pen go from $57 to over $500? The political revolving door never ends.

Dear Nigerians, Let me clarify this tweet again. Pap smears screen for cervical cancer while ovarian cancer is screened with pelvic exams, CAT scans and Magnetic Resonance imaging MRI. The same with uterine cancer which killed Dora Akunyili. We all remember how Dora looked at the end as she had been ravaged by the disease. These equipment are not always readily available to the public. Nigeria does not have a modern health system with health insurance that will pay for it. 

Can u pay N350,000 for an MRI? What everyone is arguing with me on Twitter is understandable. My point is let us women still start with a basic pap smear once a year to at least rule out ANY CANCER CELLS. Ignorance does not excuse STUPIDITY. The baddest cancer in Nigeria now is breast cancer and women still dont get mammograms yearly. Most can't afford it. I have used pics of myself in bikinis to illustrate how to do breast self exams on the 11th of the month. U can google them all over the net.

My conclusion is that the health sector failed Mayowa Ahmed just like it has done to so many ordinary citizens. President Buhari appointed 5 new subministers in the health sector. Some of us are talented health educators that can prevent these things by reaching the masses. Nigeria is not using us and thus explain why we are working for the foreign entities that trained us.

This is not an @officiallindaikeji or @aimakhuolutoyin blame game. Their actions believe it or not were VALID. Mayowa's family knew she was terminally ill, sought funds and got it but they did not handle her medical records well. It was splashed all over the internet and there were delays in transporting her to a medical destination. I pray for all the women suffering or dying from ovarian cancer and are not in the news. Mayowa's family should invest the rest of that money in helping others by setting up a foundation or NGO in her name to fund treatment for others.

Khloe Kardashian reveals her skin cancer scare #HNNhealth

Khloe Kardashian is opening up about her own frightening health scare.

The 32-year-old reality star revealed on her app that doctors found and removed a cancerous mole on her back. She's now urging fans to check their skin regularly.


"There was one mole I had on my back that was skin cancer," Kardashian shared. "I had 8 inches of skin removed. It was definitely painful because it was a lot of skin, but most of the time, the removals haven't been that bad."

She added: "I haven't had a problem in years, but wanted to share my experience with you so that if you notice something doesn't look right, you will take action and take care of your health!"

According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the U.S., and the American Cancer Society notes that more than 5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year.

33 U.S. Service Members Have Contracted Zika, Pentagon Says #HNNHealth

Thirty-three U.S. service members, including one who is pregnant, have contracted the Zika virus overseas, the Pentagon says.In addition, six dependents of military personnel have been infected, a Pentagon source told NBC News
.
Officials would not say where the service members were posted, but one defense official said all had recently traveled to areas where Zika is prevalent.

The Department of Defense started tracking the mosquito-borne illness earlier this year, according to The Military Times.

Beenie Man banned from Canada's OVO fest as he caught Zika Virus #hnnhealth

 

Beenie Man was due to play OVO Fest in Toronto last night (July 30), but had to cancel after being denied entry into Canada.

The 'Who Am I (Sim Simma)' singer was diagnosed with Zika virus, he revealed on Instagram, saying "Zika Virus hol' mi" and confirming that he had "no visa fi mi Canada show".

Zika virus is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda and is spread by mosquitoes. It often shows no symptoms or very slight symptoms similar to those of a mild bout of dengue fever. There is no specific treatment.

Ticketmaster released a statement saying that due to "immigration issues" Beenie Man would no longer be able to eprform at OVO Fest. They promised a "slew of surprise special guests" in place of the raggae star and assured festival goers that Machel Montano would still headline as planned.
