The BIGGEST Mistake #African Musicians make with #SocialMedia #HNNMusic

My Journalism career began in 1994 as a Music Journalist and I ran a music blog for five years in Canada. HipHossip Canada was endorsed by BET, MTV, VHI and MuchMusic, the four most credible music channels on television globally. I was an active music blogger then later with my public relations degree, I floated a music publicist job representing several now famous artists in the beginning and working with some via interviews or just representation. Examples are Ciara, Drake, Sean Kingston, Di’Ja, BOB, Classified, Nicki Minaj, Knaan, Vital and more.

Many Canadian artists complained that they did not get proper exposure in the USA as compared to

how American artists got prominence on the radio in Canada and at concerts. The key to all that controversy is social media. Many artists failed to invest in social media and the same happens right here in Nigeria and the rest of Africa. Social media is self promotion and there is no other way to promote yourself best. African artists need to upload their promotional songs on social media and let fans get a snippet of what their music is all about. Artists are not using social media to the fullest; most don’t want to hire social media managers such as myself to help manage their platforms. Justin Bieber was uploading his music on YouTube when Scooter Braun discovered him, took him to Usher and the rest is history.

How do you use social media to the max? Everyone is not Jay-Z who tweets 3 times a year and still remains the most successful rapper in the world. He built a brand to get there. While Jay is obsessed about his blog, wife Beyonce is crazy about her Tumblr blog and instagram where you can see her daily activities especially when she’s on tour. Some images are very personal with her daughter Blue Ivy. Beyonce never tweets and has millions of followers. To artists just starting out, start somewhere. Open every platform. Google #HNNAfrica and see my platforms. You need Twitter, Facebook, Google, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr or another blog or website, YouTube for your videos, Soundcloud and Reverbnation for your audios

Once you have your presence everywhere, pick easy names and don’t make your handles complicated. Avoid underscores, mix of caps and numbers your fans won’t remember. My amateur artist name is Kesus. I chose @IamKesus on twitter or one can choose @RealKesus if @Kesus is not available. Don’t pick names like @Kesus_Rap. 

#HNNAfrica ends with just that on every domain. Try doing the same, and then start to share your platforms all over the internet and build a fanbase. Use hashtags on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. They help people find you easily. #Music #NigerianMusic #AfricanMusic, creative hashtags like #Grammy #Junos #AMA are more. When someone is looking for something, they may just find you. Try that and get nominated for that next music award show.

I had read something in the Punch that Kiss Daniels, one of my top fave artists was attacked on stage and robbed at the Calabar festival concert. I talk about him a lot with my global fans and many of you know that I have a desire to be his international music publicist, something I posted on Instagram. Now came word of this brazen robbery. Within minutes of my tweets, global fans were LIKING and RETWEETING it. We were all worried for him. minutes later, award winning Daniels tweeted @HNNAfrica that it was NOT a robbery using an angry and a sad emoji. He wrote below:

#HNNMusic Did @Olamide_YBNL use RITUALS to LURE concert goers to #OLIC3?

So my snitches told me the crowd was overcapacity. The ballers, thugs, street urchins and Shaqcallers were all there at Olamide's #OLIC3 concert. That crowd got some people wondering and one of those were Ebuka Obi-Uchendu who asked if Olamide "jazzed" the crowd to show up. Ebuka's stan however said he should ask me. LMAO... I ain't talking.

Olamide however has a ton in his fanbase. He is truly talented. Last year a ritualist reached out to me that he had owed money for "services performed". A thread of the conversation made me reveal the incident on TV and online. Fans attacked me mercilessly online. When I tried to release the thread, both sides said things have been worked out, something I mentioned in my LIVE TVC interview on December 13th 2016 in Lagos. A journalist must protect the source and if need be so release proof.

Yes, she is a Texas girl so she should know country music well. The buzz is over as Beyonce took the stage at the CMA's with the Dixie Chicks. Beyonce sang her track "Daddy Lessons" with the Dixie Chicks, which consists of Natalie Maines, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire. That song earned a cover with the Dixie Chicks and the crowd just went wild tonight. 

Beyonce has also performed with Sugarland on the AMA stage in 2008 before. Her hit song "Irreplaceable" was that song. Country music met pop and it was all a good crossover. Many country music stars praised her on Twitter.

Rapper @KidKudi suffering from DEPRESSION while Nigerians joke about mental illness #HNNImpact

While Kid Kudi is suffering from Depression which can cause suicide, many Nigerians don't take mental illness seriously. They actually make fun of it joking about it once they don't like me or others that speak contrary to their views. People with mental illness don't need all your sympathies or some deliverance in a fakeass church, they need help from a psychiatrist to manage their symptoms and I am so glad that Cudi has checked himself into rehab. #HNNMemorial #Africa remembers Rapper Shawty Lo (@ThatsShawtyLo) as he is laid to rest #HNNMusic

He was buried on our Independence Day October 1st 2016 and I was out of my office. Yes, his last moments was at his favourite strip club and he posted the videos. Heard his body passed thru that strip club and the whole of Bankhead.  Shawty Lo, born Carlos Walker, was laid to rest during an emotional homegoing service. Held at Jackson Memorial Baptist church in Atlanta, the service was attended by over 3,000 family members, friends, and fans of the rapper.

Shawty Lo’s 11 kids brought many of the attendees to tears by sharing stories of their father and revealing how made it a point to give back to his community.

Following the service, Shawty Lo’s funeral procession drove through the Bankhead community as hundreds paid their respects to the “King of Bankhead” one last time. In these 3 pics via Twitter, I had just interviewed him before winning that BET Hip-Hop award. He actually shouted me out on that clip. Sad he never made it to Africa as he promised me soon. #HNNMusic: Lets talk about that @Beyonce #Emmys loss (The Stans)

For God sakes, she is NOT a good actor. She is a super singer. very TV or movie like venture she has done has failed. We can't do it all. The stans were furious.  I wonder what she would have done with that baseball bat if she were in the audience.

The singer – who did not attend – was up for Outstanding Variety Special and Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special for her visual album Lemonade. And when she missed out on the latter to Grease Live the internet reacted with a flurry of angry tweets – mainly aimed at the show’s directors Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski.

Even the show’s host Jimmy Kimmel made a quip about them beating her – remarking: “I wouldn’t want to be those guys when Kanye finds out they beat Beyoncé.”

Kanye West famously stormed the stage when Beyonce lost out to Taylor Swift at the VMA’s back in 2009.

Responding to her loss fans took to social media in their droves to blast Grease Live.

Earlier today, Kanye West made a surprise appearance at Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring Day Festival at Chicago’s U.S. Cellular Field. He performed “Black Skinhead,” “Can’t Tell Me Nothing,” “Touch the Sky,” “Gold Digger,” “Father Stretch My Hand Pt.1” and “Pt. 2,” his verse on Schoolboy Q’s “THat Part,” and was joined by Chance for a performance of The Life of Pablo opener “Ultralight Beam.” “I’m so proud of this young man right here, for putting all of this together,” Kanye says of Chance.

ICYMI, The Game made headlines last month after his track with DJ Khaled, “Sauce,” dropped on August 13. In the NSFW song, the artist raps that he “f--ked three Kardashians.”
