#HNNHealth Watch #EbolaInNYC SPREAD as 5y/o is raced to hospital and Quarantines loosened for healthcare workers

5-year-old boy being tested for Ebola in New York City

Amazing how Governor Cuomo lets them loosen Ebola quarantines for returning health workers because of White House pressure, yet forget that symptoms may develop anytime in that incubation period of exposure. Now comes word that a  5-year-old boy who just returned from West Africa was transported to Bellevue Hospital Sunday with possible Ebola symptoms, according to law-enforcement sources.

Have we forgotten about the patient zero who started it all in Guinea and entire family killed along with the patient zero toddler in Mali Fanta Kone who just died? Once Ebola hits a classroom in the Big Apple, everyone with wake up!

The child was vomiting and had a 103-degree fever when he was carried from his Bronx home by EMS workers wearing hazmat suits, neighbors said. “He looked weak,” said a neighbor.

“He was really, really out of it.”The boy returned with his family from Guinea Saturday night and five members of the family were being quarantined inside their apartment, sources said.

#HNNHealth Why the @WhiteHouse PUSHING FOR Reversal of #Ebola Quarantines in NYC and N.J?

The Obama administration has been pushing the governors of New York and New Jersey to reverse their

decision ordering all medical workers returning from West Africa who had contact with Ebola patients to be quarantined, an administration official said.

But on Sunday both governors, Andrew Cuomo of New York and Chris Christie of New Jersey, stood by their decision, saying the federal guidelines did not go far enough.

At the same time, the first person to be forced into isolation under the new protocols, Kaci Hickox, a nurse returning from Sierra Leone, planned to mount a legal challenge to the quarantine order. Despite having no symptoms, she has been kept under quarantine at a hospital in New Jersey, where she has been confined to a tent equipped with a portable toilet and no shower. On Sunday, she spoke to CNN about the way she has been treated, describing it as “inhumane.”

The rapidly escalating events played out both privately, in intense negotiations and phone calls between federal and state officials, as well as publicly in the nurse’s pointed criticism of the New Jersey governor.

Ever since Cuomo, a Democrat, and Christie, a Republican, announced the plan at a hastily called news conference Friday evening, top administration officials have been speaking with Cuomo daily and have been in touch with Christie, trying to get them to rescind the order.

But in that time, two more states — Illinois and Florida — announced they were instituting similar policies.

Federal officials made it clear they do not agree with the governors about the need or effectiveness of a total quarantine for health care workers, though they were careful not to directly criticize the governors themselves.
A senior administration official, who did not want to be identified in order to discuss private conversations with state officials on the issue, called the decision by the governors “uncoordinated, very hurried, an immediate reaction to the New York City case that doesn’t comport with science.”

#HNNHealth U.S. nurse quarantined over #Ebola criticizes her treatment of being QUARANTINED 21 days

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Illinois joined New York and New Jersey in imposing mandatory quarantines for people arriving with a risk of having contracted Ebola in West Africa, but the first person isolated under the new rules, a nurse returning from Sierra Leone, strongly criticized her treatment.

Under a policy introduced on Friday, anyone arriving at John F. Kennedy International Airport or Newark Liberty International Airport after having contact with Ebola patients in Liberia, Sierra Leone or Guinea must submit to a mandatory quarantine for 21 days. Three weeks is the longest documented period for an Ebola infection to emerge.

Kaci Hickox, a nurse, was placed in quarantine at Newark after returning on Friday from working with medical charity Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone.

Hickox, who was transferred from the airport to a hospital where she was placed in isolation, described a confusing and upsetting experience at the airport and worried the same treatment was in store for other American health workers trying to help combat the epidemic.

"I ... thought of many colleagues who will return home to America and face the same ordeal," Hickox wrote in an article published on Saturday by The Dallas Morning. "Will they be made to feel like criminals and prisoners?"

"I am scared that, like me, they will arrive and see a frenzy of disorganization, fear and, most frightening, quarantine," she said in the article, published on the paper's website.

The state quarantines were imposed after a New York City doctor was diagnosed with the disease on Thursday, days after returning to the city from working with Ebola patients for Doctors Without Borders in Guinea.

Dr. Craig Spencer, now being treated at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan and described as in stable condition, was the fourth person to be diagnosed with the illness in the United States and the first in the country's largest city.

His case, and the fact he was out and about in the city in the period before his symptoms emerged, set off renewed worries in the United States about the spread of the disease, which has killed thousands of people in West Africa. The concern over Ebola has become a political issue ahead of Nov. 4 congressional elections.

Press Conference on Dr Craig Spencer's Ebola diagnosis
A New York doctor who recently returned from West Africa has tested positive for Ebola and is being isolated at a Manhattan hospital, city and state officials said Thursday night.

The doctor, who has been identified as Dr. Craig Allen Spencer by New York government sources, was placed in an isolation unit today at Bellevue Hospital after reporting Ebola-like symptoms. He had a fever and gastrointestinal symptoms when he was transferred to Bellevue, said NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will confirm the preliminary positive test. CDC test results are expected by the end of the day on Friday.

"We've been preparing for just this circumstance. We were hoping that didn't happen but we were also realistic," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a press conference.

Dr. Mary Bessett, NYC Health Commissioner: "Bellevue began preparation in August. There is a long standing isolation unit here that has been around since the AIDS epidemic"

The CDC says the doctor passed the temperature screenings and tweeted below

“Healthcare worker returned through JFK Airport on Oct. 17, participated in enhanced screening for all returning travelers from W. Africa.”

“3 members of CDC’s Ebola Response Team will arrive in New York City tonight; CDC Ebola

“CDC in close communications w/ New York City Health Department & Bellevue Hospital, is providing technical assistance & resources.”
