TORONTO CRIMESTOPPERS: OUR PAL CONSTABLE SCOTT MILLS IS FEATURED IN DIGITAL JOURNAL FOR HIS WORK ON SOCIAL MEDIA.
Toronto Police Intel discovered the photos but not before they had been on the page for a few hours. Because of that person's actions the page no longer allows for photos and video to be posted by the public. That move was a hard one for Mills.Constable Mills is one of the nicest men you will ever talk to. His dedication to serving the people of Toronto is non-stop. Scott works with the Public Information Unit. The unit is behind the press releases that journalists use to begin their reports on crime in the city. The unit is also behind the department's social media networking. For the past six years Scott has been the key player for that part of the work.Six years ago Mills teamed up with Crime Stoppers. The move was a bold one for the police and for Mills personally. If Crime Stoppers didn't work out online then it would be unlikely for the Toronto Police to move into the social media age. While the program partners with the police it is not part of the Toronto Police Service. Crime stoppers is a group of concerned citizen volunteers serve on the Board of Directors to oversee the Toronto Crime Stoppers program. The TPS provides them a coordinator to manage the day-to-day operations and talks the program School Crime Stoppers but that's their limit. The program celebrated their 25th year in Toronto in 2010.
He posted the first video on YouTube in April 2007 launching a new way for the site to connect with the public. From YouTube came a page on Facebook to a Twitter account and a presence on Vibe.TO.Mills efforts paid off. In 2009 there were a record number of tips that lead to arrests. One-third of the more than 10,300 tips were drug-related.By 2010 Toronto Police had a good view of what social media networking could be doing for the city. Mills left Crime stoppers in April right before the G20 Summit to become the Social Media Officer for TPS.While the tips on crimes is invaluable to the police it's the stories that don't get in the media because they never happened that are most telling of the use of the program."Since I started with Crime stoppers I can say that we have stopped crimes from taking place.
Two school shooting didn't happen because of the tips we received and countless teenagers didn't commit suicide because we were alerted through social media networking."Getting those tips in takes a lot of work. It's more than the 40 hours that Mills is paid for. He works hard, often in the background because he knows that the program is making the streets of Toronto safer."I sleep better at night because of this work. It's very productive and very time consuming. The possibilities of how to use social media in policing are endless, it's a huge tool. The TPS is putting a lot of faith into this program."

AWESOME SFTC: HIPHOSSIP IN THE COMMUNITY: WE TEAMED LOCAL TORONTO RAPPERS WHO HAVE TURNED THEIR LIVES AROUND WITH TORONTO POLICE TO RECORD A PSA.

Crime victim advocate, Publicist and Music Journalist Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo has paired up local rappers with the Toronto police to record public service announcements for the ongoing TAVIS initiative. She has been hosting free press conferences for families of crime victims to make appeals to the public for tips on their homicide cases and has always been a strong supporter of Toronto Crime Stoppers and "Prevention" of crime in youth.
The Toronto Anti-Violence Intervention Strategy is a Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services provincially funded initiative, dedicated to creating and maintaining sustainable, safe neighbourhoods. TAVIS initiatives are operating in all of the 17 Toronto police Divisions and are supported by every unit in the Service.
The key message for this TAVIS PSA is that TAVIS officers are there to help the community, not harass them. TAVIS officers listen and talk with community members and the goal is to work together and basically the two parts to TAVIS is community building and enforcement.
Kemi whose music and PR blog HipHossip.com and Fanada.ca features You Tube videos of appeals from crime victims teamed up five local Toronto rappers from all corners of the city, ethnic groups and nationalities for this project. The Rappers Nes (Noel Esso), Berg Bauge (Tony Rosier), Gilly Gadan (Gilliano Joseph), Kadar Star (Kadar Hall) and Jay Stacks.
Any media wishing to interview this team of talented musicians on why they chose to be part of this initiative, talk about their own past run-ins with the law and how they are planning to change other lives and motivate youth in the community and getting the public to support TAVIS should contact me on an interview location.
HipHossip has just teamed up in a brand partnership with US network Black Entertainment television (BET) on a new hip-hop show "The Deal." As a Canadian partner and Correspondent, we hope to expose the world to our breed of positive rappers in the community.

WHY AM I GIVING CAM'RON'S CD A BAD RAP?
The editor of a popular hip-hop website is calling on a record-maker and a Canadian store chain to stop sales of an American rapper's CD she fears will inspire youth to commit crimes.
And "Kemi" Omololu Olunloyo said yesterday she'll ask immigration officials to prevent Cameron "Cam'ron" Giles and his rap group from performing in Canada.
The sixth commercial CD made by the New Yorker -- due out tomorrow -- is called Crime Pays.
On the first track, I hate my job, Cam'ron raps about returning to crime to earn a better living than as a $12-an-hour coffin cleaner without much work unless more young people's bodies are delivered, Olunloyo said.
"I Hate My Job is telling our kids not to get an everyday job and just go back to the streets," she said on a new website, seeking supporters for a petition opposing the CD.
'REDUCE CRIMES'
"We need to reduce the crimes," the mother of three sons, editor of the Hiphossip Canada music gossip website and spokesman for several murder victim's families, said from her Chalkfarm Dr. apartment -- near where two men were recently killed.
A native of Nigeria and longtime U.S. resident who moved here in 2007, Olunloyo said: "Toronto is now my home. It's much safer than in the United States and I don't want that to change.
"I love hip-hop," but she said Crime Pays is another example of rap that goes too far in glorifying crime.
Several U.S. rappers have been turned back from the border for having violence-promoting lyrics or criminal records, which Olunloyo said she supports.
"Children imitate things," she said. "They will follow what they see ... They want to be like children in the U.S. who have a gun."
Giles -- who changed his stage name from Killa Cam -- is a Harlem-born rapper and actor who founded The Diplomats, also called Dipset.
Shot in 2005 after refusing to give up his expensive sportscar to carjackers, Giles told a TV interviewer he didn't know the shooter but would refuse to help police regardless, to avoid hurting record sales if branded a "snitch."
He couldn't be reached for comment.
The Hiphossip Canada site is: hiphossip.com.
