THE TOP 5 MUSICAL MOMENTS OF 2010 ON HIPHOSSIP CANADA.

1. When KJ decided to educate Torontonians about using Crime Stoppers to solve a crime, he created a song and placed pictures into it showing our work with families of crime victims "My mom's a Snitch" became a hit among several people and Law enforcement. Toronto Police tweeted it on their Facebook pages.

2. The Launch of Ruby and Chikaadee's video "Thaya Thaya." They are the only boyfriend/girlfriend duo of rapper/singers based out of Toronto. Ruby & Chikaadee put together a song that captured our attention rapped in Tamil. The video hits went up to a staggering 50,000 in 48 hours and still climbs till today. All their videos are viral.

3. The voice of Chris Jackson everywhere and songs with Blaze and Jay-Z. The only unsigned artist in Toronto with the BIGGEST fan base. We were all fascinated with the different songs. Chris Jackson captured our hearts and EARS. Watch out for him in 2011.

4. The MURDER of Rapper Donald Grant aka Don Kartel in a Missasauga, Ontario hotel here in Canada. Kartel was good rapper that I mentored but as I knew him, he was a hardworker as compared to many of these jokers in Canada. He hated guns and will fight with his fists. Something he said in his last tweets.

Now came word that Kartel was a "PIMP" according to Inspectors at Peel Region homicide and the suspect was Jerome Derby, a 20 year old we spotted in another rap video holding an R.I.P shirt at 0:58 and the brother of another homicide victim in 2010 19-year-old Jermaine Derby. The whole story is so weird that it boils down to all this gun toting.

Julie Belluz contacted me from Macleans magazine and I spoke about the Kartel I knew. The search is still on for Jerome Derby. Click the picture to read the Maclean article. For those of you that don't know, Macleans is Canada's weekly TIME/Newsweek type magazine. You have to be important to get in there and Don was. Great tribute in a special issue, the 2010 year in pictures.

5. When HipHossip partnered with Toronto Police to make the community safer. The teen violence rates in Toronto was very alarming in 2010, so HipHossip teamed up with Toronto Police TAVIS initiative and local upcoming rappers to rap some public service announcements. These young rappers possibly these days had more credibility recording them into the ears of local teens than the cops would so they went to Z103FM and Flow 93.5FM to record these PSA's where they met with Toronto Police. The PSA's ran the whole month of June and bam, NO HOMICIDES! Below are Rappers Brad Lyko and Andrew Slowly's video. Read the story in the Toronto Sun. Lets do this again and yes, we are planning to film a video PSA soon. Stay tuned!

CANADIAN RAPPERS SPEAK AT HIPHOSSIP'S ANTI-GUN NEWS CONFERENCE IN TORONTO.

Chach who is a Toronto born pop/R&B/Dance and hip-hop singer spoke at the news conference. Watch her video here at the Toronto Sun website

KJ also spoke about the need to use crime stoppers to help prevent and solve crimes. He referred to his crime stoppers video "My Mom's a snitch."

I spoke to CTV's MTV Canada and other media about this wave of guns being glamorized in music on November 26th 2010

CTV, the nations #1 broadcaster broadcasted it live via satellite across Canada.

Rapper Mindbender Supreme read a statement to the media

I spoke about the lost victims and their ages. Most of them were black males.

Chach, the voice of songs 'Starlight' and 'Longtime' and rappers Addi "Mindbender" Stewart and Kay Jeezy spoke to media at the corner of Dundas Street West and Howland Avenue behind the bus stop where 18-year-old Jarvis St. Remy was shot and killed. The Western Technical Commercial School graduate, who had been out visiting a friend, died May 9, 2009. His death remains unsolved.

Kids are dying like crazy this year that I even asked the Canadian rappers to show up at a news conference denouncing guns in their music. Only 3 showed up. There were 15 media outlets and everyone started calling me to "reschedule" when they saw all the coverage they could have gotten. Sorry, this was a genuine news conference not a promo opportunity. SMH on all you rappers. EPIC FAILURES! Call me a hater, do I care?

Read what's in this November 26th 2010 cover. I said it straight. Now maybe the US rappers will know why their asses are being banned from coming in here to perform. Around here this is serious stuff. Check out the list below and your lyrics before you buy your ticket Cam'ron. We have a wave of gun violence being influenced by gangsta rappers among other things.

Mindbender Supreme (Addi Stewart) spoke about the need to see the selfishness that causes some youth to shoot and kill others and that Hollywood images are also to be included if we are looking at an overall violence factor in the arts. He stated that hip-hop is not always to blame. Yes and I believe that Rapper Ghetto Child told me that in an interview coming up about his use of a gun to shoot up the club scene in the Rapper Classified video. The dynamic Ghetto Child (PJ Smith) urged kids that art must be clearly differentiated from real life and urged them not to pack guns. Stay tuned for my interview with him.

Lets end the madness by listening to Rapper Classified's message for some of our lawmakers, residents and fans here.

MERRY XMAS FROM DEATHROW RECORDS.

Thanks to Publicist Sasha Stoltz at Deathrow for sending this funny video over based on the "Chronic" album from Dr Dre.

ALEXISONFIRE IS LESS MANIC BUT STILL ROWDY?

Says Jason McNeil in the Toronto Sun. They are definitely not the kids they used to be but St. Catharines rock band Alexisonfire have managed to age gracefully when it comes to delivering an aggressive performance. The band - playing the first of two evenings at Toronto's Sound Academy Thursday night - weren't quite the manic, screaming quintet earlier albums like 2004's Watch Out would indicate. But the new style of rowdy, punk-meets-rockabilly they have going for them now seems just as palatable.

Led by vocalist George Pettit but with healthy help from Dallas Green and Wade MacNeil, Alexisonfire opened with Young Cardinals, the first single off last year's album Old Crows/Young Cardinals. Here MacNeil's wails complemented Green's slightly softer side quite nicely. Read the rest here. Billy is friends with KJ and I.

NEWS CANADA DOESN'T CARE ABOUT: CAM'RON AND VADO BANNED FROM CANADA.

Did I not tell you about Cam'ron and his awesome role modeling to the gangs worldwide? But then freedom of speech rules. "Crime Pays", "Gunz and Butta" shooting and killing? Am I the only one fed up with all the gangsta rap in Toronto. Now comes "Killa Cam " at the border yesterday and some CBSA chic tells him, Vado and the whole entourage that they are NOT coming into Canada because of a machine gun charge in 2003 and that Vado and the DJ have felonies.

These days Toronto has become a war zone and I am a crime VICTIM advocate among other things. Last year when I complained about the controversial CD, I was dissed. The Canadians don't mess with these guns and gang warfare. Lyrics are getting ppl turned away from the border like Bones, Thugs and Harmony got in 2008. So Cam was here 2 months ago to perform in T-Dot but the mood in Canada sometimes changes with regards to who gets in when.

To make things worse they tweet the CBSA agents picture at customs, something Canadian officials may consider a threat. Now they ain't even coming back ever! My prayers have been answered a year and a half later. Sorry guys, I told you so. Below are the apologies to the fans.

COLUMBIA HOUSE 13 CD'S FOR A $1 ERA CLOSES IN CANADA.

The promise of a dozen albums for one dollar, or some other irresistible introductory offer from the Columbia House music and movie club, came to an end in Canada on Thursday. The entire Toronto staff was terminated after its parent company's Canadian division declared bankruptcy.Reports about the sudden closure of Direct Brands Media, which was also offering new members a $3 book from the Doubleday Book Club, echoed a now-familiar story of an entertainment retailer unable to justify its continued existence in the digital age.

It's all over!!

THE 2010 MTV AFRICA AWARDS ARE LIVE FROM NIGERIA.

2Face is #1. Best Male and Artist of the Year

Officer Ricky in the motherland

BET's Nneka is from Nigeria too

Banky rocked that Ne-Yo look on the red carpet

We love you Eve for coming to Africa to host our show!

As a second time venue, Nigeria is once again hosting the MTV Africa awards. Philadelphia Rapper Eve is hosting with international stars like Rick Ross, T-Pain and even Chuck D all in Africa. The African artist are dynamic with the old timers TuFace, D'Banj and the newcomers Sasha, Jozi, Barbara Kanam, Fally Ipupa, banky, Daddy Owen and more. Seems like the Nigerian artists are dominating year after year. I am a Nigerian and I know the strenght of our artists if they are not censored by the evil government. A press conference was held yesterday followed by rehearsals and then the show tonight.

As one artist rushed the stage wrapped in Nigeria's green-and-white flag, Africa's most populous nation ran away with the awards Saturday night during the MTV Africa Music Awards.Nigerian singer 2 Face, known for his catchy, fast-paced pop song "Implication," claimed both the artist of the year and best male performer awards during the ceremony held in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos. He also dominated during a live performance, throwing himself into the crowd and running away from two scantily clad dancers dressed as police officers."One love to Nigeria," the artist said as he held the golden MTV award, to the applause of the audience.

His singing often includes words in the Yoruba language, heard throughout southwestern Nigeria.National pride ran high as rapper Banky W took to the stage carrying the country's green-and-white flag, later tossing it over his shoulder during his performance.

The country's musicians fared well during the ceremony—Nigerian act P Square won for Best Group, Nigerian singer Sasha won as best female performer and Nigerian rapper Mo Cheddah won for best new artist. Among other winners were Fally Ipupa, a singer from the Democratic Republic of the Congo who received the best video award for his song "Sexy Dance." U.S. rapper Eminem won best international artist, but did not attend the event.

Africa has long featured a vibrant music scene, but artists have had difficulties breaking nto overseas markets. Famous African artists include Senegal's Youssou N'dour, Nigerian Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti and South African impresario Miriam Makeba, who died in November 2008.Both Makeba and Kuti's names were mentioned during the ceremony, as MTV gave an award in the South African singer's memory.

Rapper Chuck D of Public Enemy recognized the tradition of music being used as a weapon against injustice, drawing a cheer when mentioning Kuti. He earlier led others in a rendition of "Fight the Power," the song ending with the artists raising closed fists into the air. "You have everything you need right here," Chuck D said. "Recognize your legends; recognize your history."

Yet as Nigeria approaches a critical presidential election next year and corruption still pervades life, no one mentioned it in the air-conditioned comfort of the hotel ballroom where the ceremony took place. MTV's regional music channel MTV Base reaches 48.5 million viewers across sub-Saharan Africa via satellite and local television stations. A big congratulations to Slim Shady!! This is Eminem's what 8th Best hip-hop artist award now? He's got 10 Grammy nominations and I am interviewing his Engineer next week.

MIRIAM MAKEBA PRONOUNCED “MAMA LEGEND” AT 2010 MTV AFRICA MUSIC AWARDS WITH AIRTEL.

Recording artist and civil rights campaigner Miriam Makeba has been honoured by MTV at the third annual MTV Africa Music Awards with Airtel. The life and work of the South African singer and civil rights activist, who died in November 2008, will be celebrated at the MTV Africa Music Awards with Airtel in Lagos on Saturday 11 December 2010. Makeba, whose stellar career spanned more than 50 years, was honoured by MTV for her musical talent and for her role in bringing African music and rhythms into the global spotlight. In her long and glittering career, Makeba performed for John F. Kennedy, dueted with Harry Belafonte and Paul Simon, brought African political issues into the mainstream consciousness and won comparisons with Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra. A victim of oppression herself, Makeba fought tirelessly to ensure that others would be free from oppression, and was appointed a UN Goodwill ambassador in 1999.

Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, “Miriam Makeba is a true legend and rightly celebrated throughout the world for her beautiful voice, fighting spirit and pioneering interpretation of African music.”
Miriam Makeba follows in the footsteps of previous MAMA Legend award winners Fela Anikulapo Kuti (2008) and Lucky Dube (2009). The MTV Africa Music Awards 2010 is sponsored by Airtel in association with MasterCard. Other partners supporting the MTV Africa Music Awards with Airtel include Arik Air and the Lagos State Government.

THE LATEST ON MISSING CANADIAN RAPPER DY.

MuchMusic's Red Hot Blog writes...."Yesterday we brought you a video of Danny Fernandes mourning the disappearance of his friend, collaborator and CP labelmate DY (aka Forrest Schab). Today, the missing Vancouver rapper’s family issued a statement.“We knew Forrest was not going to be available for 2 weeks, and we didn’t know if he was coming home or staying down there. We didn’t want to draw unnecessary attention that may embarrass him”, expressed his sister Jessica Schab, “We just kept thinking give it one more day and we’ll hear from him. We never expected that he was missing.“We thought Forrest might turn up any day and didn’t want to negatively affect his career while he was gone.”

“Forrest has always wanted to inspire others in challenging circumstances to make it and he would want to continue to inspire people and get his music out to the world,” she added. In keeping with what they felt DY would have wanted, both his family and his record label CP have agreed to resume with the release of DY’s second single “That’s My Spot,” which also features D Woods formerly of Danity Kane.In a statement Tony Sal, CEO of CP Records, said, “We have spoken with the Schab family and sympathize greatly with them. At their request, we will continue with the release of DY’s single ‘That’s My Spot’ immediately as his family believes there is nothing more important to DY than to have his music heard.”

DY will come home one day. Remember what that kid Beiber says...Never say Never. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

NICK CANNON DENYING MIMI IS PREGGO WITH TWINS.

MARIAH CAREY's husband NICK CANNON has laughed off rumours his wife is pregnant with twins - insisting the singer simply made a slip-up in a recent interview. The pop superstar announced earlier this year (10) she is expecting her first child with the rapper/actor in the spring (11). Reports suggesting Carey is expecting a double bundle of joy later emerged after the Hero hitmaker referred to her baby as "they". But Cannon has now explained the slip, insisting Carey was just being careful not to mention the baby's sex -because neither of them knows what gender it is.

He tells Access Hollywood, "That (twins) rumour came from an interview Mariah did where she was talking about her Christmas album and how she's been singing so much, and she referred to her stomach as 'they'. She said, 'I hope they don't hate Christmas.' From there we heard all of these twin rumours... But we want to be surprised (about the sex of the baby). We were told that it's going be one of the biggest surprises of your lifetime to see what the sex of the baby is, so, we're trying to wait. But you never know."
