His recently announced partnership with the National Domestic Violence Registry (NDVR) echoes his continued commitment to service, expanding his parameters as a jazz musician, utilizing his talents as a vehicle to help heal the world. As a partner, the musician/producer/author/speaker has positioned himself to enhance the plight of abused women, and women at large, by bringing much need attention to NDVR as a resourceful remedial aid.

The National Domestic Violence Registry works to gather and house the conviction records of offenders, both men and women, who have been found guilty of domestic violence and domestic violence related offenses and provides this information, free of charge, to the general public. A woman can now easily look up the name of a paramour and find out if he has a history of abuse in his past, potentially avoiding explosive circumstances.

"I have always recognized women as a most significant pillar of society. The proliferation of any negative portrayals in music, films or books that both sexually objectifies and perpetuates escalating violence against women, only hinders her perceived rise and deserved progression. My music and books are an ongoing tribute to her existence and her greatness. I offer them as a healing balm," cites Blake.

"I can think of no entity of whom I am both humbled and most proud to vigorously assert my name in endorsement than the National Domestic Violence Registry. NDVR is a preventive cure to the pervasive cancer of domestic violence in our society," adds Russel Blake in an official endorsement statement.

As a musician, Russel Blake proudly continues the musical legacy of his father, Latin musical great Alexander Blake, and his brother, world renowned jazz bassist, Alex Blake. At the foundation of all his artistry lies his impeccable composition, theoretical and musical arrangement skills; all of which are self-taught.

A native New Yorker now residing in Los Angeles, Russel Blake has shared his talents in 65 countries, on five continents, and holds the title of 'Adjunct Professor' at five universities. Besides accompanying and recording with several music giants, such asChaka Kahn, Angie Stone, Wynton Marsalis, Sonny Rollins and Harry Belafonte, to name just a few, Russel has also been featured as the exclusive bassist for Broadway productions "The Lion King," and "Dreamgirls."

Among his highest achievements, Blake was appointed by the U.S. State Department to perform as an Ambassador of Goodwill to eight West African nations. He was also contracted by the U.S. Department of Defense to lecture on the symbiotic nature of Science and Music for DARPA's (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) International Conference.

Russel's tome "Proverbs 31: The Virtuous Black Woman Volume 1," written in Psalm format, elevates the image of Black women and counters the negative perception created by media and society, expressing the right for all women to be treated with unwavering respect and dignity. The book has been endorsed by author and poetess emeritus Maya Angelou and political strategist Donna Brazile and is supported by First Lady Michelle Obama. Blake is planning two additional volumes which will embrace women of all hue and nationalities.

Blake's partnership with the National Domestic Violence Registry is a significant alliance as the issue of domestic violence impacts mostly women victims who are abused by men. His leadership as a male role model lends added resonance to his beautiful music and greater impact to his powerful spoken and written word.




This is my FIRST EVER Jazz music post on this blog of 5 years. History is made! As a black woman who went thru domestic violence at one point in my life, I have to say that this is compelling and very interesting. What drives Blake? It's called leadership as a role model. This is a strong man who gives every black woman and as a matter of fact every WOMAN something to look forward to. I plan to interview him early next month. 2012 CMW RECAP: BOB LAINE INDUCTED INTO THE CANADIAN RADIO MUSIC HALL OF FAME.

Bob Laine was inducted into the Canadian Radio Hall of Fame during the 2012 CMW's Canadian radio Music awards. I was pleased to personally meet his daughter Cindy Laine Shlanger who was so NICE and picked up the award for her late father. Being that I moved to Canada 5 years ago, I never knew Bob's legacy till I read up on it. He was a true icon in Toronto's radio history. Pls read below.

Bob Laine began his radio career in Simcoe Ontario, at CFRS – Canada's Farmland Radio Service. After nine months, Bob moved on to work on the all night show at CHUM in Toronto in 1958. After a decade on the night shift, Bob moved to days, where he had the opportunity to impress  “the big guys”  with what he knew and, in 1970, he was offered the opportunity to manage CHUM–FM. At age 32, he entered management and never looked back.

During his time in management, Bob relished being involved in the whole operation of the radio station. He founded the CHUM radio network, and became its Vice President – General Manager. When asked about his time at CHUM, Bob couldn't single out a particular important moment, but felt strongly that he had had a glorious career. He was truly touched when Thursday October 30, 2003 was named Bob Laine Day at 1050 CHUM in honour of his retirement. He thought it was wonderful and a real treat, especially since he was on air with Gord James on the morning show.

On May 26, 2007, CHUM celebrated its 50th Anniversary which happened to coincide with Doors Open Toronto. As a result, there were guided tours through the building, as well as special programming throughout the day. Bob was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the CHUM celebration, including spending six hours on air that day, as well as arranging a reunion of CHUM  “veterans”  the night before which was attended by a few hundred people.

Five years ago, Bob Laine and Doug Thompson began assembling the history and heritage of CHUM which would become the CHUMuseum. In his words,  “Nobody knows CHUM better than I do. So much stuff that had gone missing that I approached Doug Thompson to see if we could salvage some stuff.” 

Now retired, Bob is heavily involved with the CHUMuseum, and the CBMF/FMCR. Among his other interests, Bob teaches radio programming at Seneca College, conducts pre–op classes at Sunnybrook Hospital for open–heart surgery patients, and proudly reports that  “Since I've retired, I've taken 10 strokes off my golf game.”

THE BEST AWARD SHOW IN CANADA GEARS UP AS THE STYLUS NOMINEES AND SCHEDULE IS ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2012 STYLUS AWARDS..

On Monday May 28th, 2012 the most influential players in urban and club culture from across the country will come together again for an evening of recognition and celebration. After six sold out years The Stylus Awards has quickly become the ‘must-attend’ event of the year for the country’s biggest and brightest stars in the urban, dance and club music scene.

For the first time since 2008, The Stylus Awards will have a new home. The legendary and historic Danforth Music Hall will play host for this incredible event. Restored to its original look and sound, The Music Hall is considered one of the country’s most important music venues, having featured legendary groups like The Clash, The Police and Oasis to name a few.

The Danforth Music Hall is located at 147 Danforth Avenue in the hub of Toronto’s East end.

International comedian TRIXX will return to rock the house once again with big laughs and controversial material to host this year’s show. The legendary careers of incredible talents Michie Mee and DJ Bunny will be celebrated as they are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

The award nominations are based on a bevy of different genres and with voting submissions now closed and the nominees list signed, sealed and delivered, some talents such as Kardinal Offishall, Melanie Fiona, The Weeknd, Drake, 4 Korners, Charlie Brown, Wristpect, T-Minus, Boi 1da, and Noah “40″ Shebib have been nominated for categories such as the Fan Choice Artist of the year, Fan Choice DJ of the year, and the Canadian Producer of the Year to name a few (a complete list of nominees is listed below). With today’s announcement many nominees are celebrating multiple nods including DJ Anchor, (Saskatoon) with 4 nominations, and triple nominees 4 Korners (Toronto), Mike Tomas (Edmonton), Charlie Brown (Toronto), Lissa Monet (Toronto), Dames Nellas (Toronto), and Keith Dean (Montreal).

On May 26, 2012 in Toronto, the Stylus Awards presented by Pioneer DJ will kick-off with the 2012 Spinfest weekend, which is a three-day event showcasing the hottest talents in music nationwide and incredible conference speakers. The weekend of mix n’mingling all lead up to the Awards ceremony as the final premiere event. Congratulations to Shaun Boothe on his DOUBLE 2012 Stylus nomination for the  "Let me Go" video as "Video of the Year" as well as his mixtape "Waiting Room" which was also nominated in the  Artist Mixtape of the year category. Boothe who is one of Canada's Top 3 rappers has been in the news lately for yet another video titled Child Soldiers depicting the ongoing plight of these children forced into the military in war torn countries. Our own KJ played that part in the video. The Stylus awards will be given out Monday May 28th 2012 at the Danforth Music hall in Toronto.

I guess we all now know why the Young Jeezy concert in Montreal was canned. It didn't help when the shooting started in Calgary, Toronto and London, Ontario.

Here's what caught my attention. He approached me on Twitter and his Twitter bio read.

 "Starving musician.. Literally I be hungry af.. Im 20 years old I make music and I like sex."

He said in a tweet that he is not from California, just lives there. I hear Drake's voice under former BET Video Soul's/WPGC Donnie Simpson's face. Yes he has a serious resemblance to Donnie! Something about this kid sounds very good. For one, he can market himself well. Simple easygoing US artists, no noise. Keep forging ahead young man and keep your eyes on the prize. I said this to Young Jeezy, Ciara, Diamond, Nicki Minaj and L'il Scrappy in 2004. It's now 2012 and the rest is history. Remember leave the haters behind and ignore any negativity.

Mekka Don is an American of Nigerian descent. At the end of the day the homie has a LAW degree and chose to rap. Many of y'all Toronto rappers don't even go past 7th grade and all u do is hating on me, like I care. You know the Linsanity and Otunga syndrome. Otunga's got a law degree too and chose the WWE. It's what your mind tells you to do. Mekka Don even has an MTV U AWARD for this H-Town video! 
 
Mekka Don raps out this "Dirty" video out in front of that Hakeem Olajuwon sign. Nigerians are so HOT the whole world can't get enuff of them. Olajuwon as u know was an NBA star in his hay days.
