"Anvil" rocks film documentary awards.

Rock on, Anvil. The aging band that never tasted music stardom found a measure of Hollywood fame on Friday when "Anvil, The Story of Anvil" won two film awards, including best documentary, from a key group of moviemakers.

The International Documentary Association, a Los Angeles group that promotes and supports nonfiction film, late Friday awarded its top prize to "Anvil" director Sacha Gervasi for his story about the metal band that for more than three decades has tried, and failed, to score one major hit record.

The IDA also gave "Anvil" its music documentary award.

The movie, which became a cult hit in art house theaters in 2009, harkens back to the Canadian band's origins in the 1970s when its two key members, Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner, were on the brink of success playing on the same stages with the likes of Bon Jovi and Poison.

But Anvil never hit the big-time and the movie catches up with the band in the 2000s as Kudlow and Reiner, now aging rockers, pull together one last tour and scrape together cash to make one more album. What emerges is a tale of chasing dreams and testing the bonds of a lifelong friendship.

The IDA is comprised of many key documentary makers and others working in nonfiction film, and because of that, its awards are widely watched leading to the Oscars in March.

Yet, perhaps in keeping tune with Anvil itself, "Anvil" won't be an Oscar winner as it did not even make the short-list

of documentaries to be considered for Academy Awards.

In other honors, the IDA gave its short documentary award to "Salt," by directors Michael Angus and Murray Fredericks, in which audiences journey to the featureless landscape of Lake Eyre, South Australia.

Veteran documentary maker and Oscar winner Errol Morris ("The Thin Blue Line" "The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara") was given the 2009 Career Achievement Award.

Long-running PBS television series "POV" was given the continuing series honor, and the Sundance Channel's six-part "Architecture School" was named best limited series on TV.

Soul Train Awards return after two-year hiatus.

Brush up on your Bus Stop and Itch and Scratch, because the Soul Train Awards are slated to return to the airwaves on Nov. 29. The ceremony, created by the legendary Don Cornelius (pictured) to honor the best in R&B music, has been absent from television since 2007; the 2009 awards will be broadcast on Centric, a new channel jointly owned by BET and MTV.

Among the honorees at the awards are Island Def Jam CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid, his longtime creative partner, performer/producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, and '70s hitmakers Chaka Khan and Charlie Wilson of the Gap Band. Taraji P. Henson, currently seen in theaters in "I Can Do Bad All by Myself," and Terrence Howard, will host.

TIME TO RETIRE: M.I.A WINS OSCAR, GRAMMY AND HAS A NEW BABY!

Award-winning British rapper M.I.A. can add another accomplishment to her list of accolades, courtesy of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The entertainer took home an Oscar for best original song Sunday night 2/22/09 at this year's Academy Awards.

M.I.A. received the honor for her work on the tune "O Saya," which was composed by Indian music director A.R. Rahman for the critically-acclaimed film Slumdog Millionnaire. She won a Grammy earlier this month for Swagga like us and had a baby Feb 11th. Congrats!

THE BET HONORS: WHITNEY LOOKS SUPER!!!

The BET honors was shot on Saturday 17th Jan and will be aired on inauguration day. Whitney has definitely made a comeback. Mary J and QL were looking as sweet as ever. Monica had a little bit too much bling and Ne-Yo makes waves with his girl. MCLyte looked a little cold and Diddy was there as well. Everyone was busy this weekend! Check it out on 1/20/09 on BET. Good luck as that may clash with that inaugural ball with Beyonce singing at the Neighborhood ball over at ABC.

The 66th annual Golden globe awards went down last night . J-Lo already has a history of very revealing dresses but for someone who just had twins? Qho do you pick as the hotter dress wearer? J-Lo pr Beyonce.

MARY J BLIGE AND TYLER PERRY TO BE HONORED AT THE BET HONORS.

MARY J. BLIGE and TYLER PERRY will be honoured at the second annual BET Honours. The R&B singer and the filmmaker are just two of the stars set to be recognised at the event - they will be joined by Magic Johnson, dance pioneer Judith Jamison, style guru B. Smith and South Carolina Congressman James E. Clyburn next month (Jan09).

The awards, which will air on 9 February (09), are part of the festivities for the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama - BET is also putting on its first inaugural ball which will air on the same day (20Jan09).

Congrats to them both! I may plan to cover that show.

ASIDE FROM ALL THE BLOODSHED AND VIOLENCE, The 6th annual Urban Music Awards took place at the IndigO2 on the 15th of November 2008. The much anticipated event kicked off in the heart of London’s IndigO2. The red carpet was filled with celebrities from the world of music, fashion, television who all came out in force to support the Urban Music Awards UK. From Bobby Davro, Ms. Dynamite, Mica Paris, Gary Lucy, Sway, Shaznay Lewis, Kele le Roc, Angelica Bell, Bianca Gascoigne, Roll Deep, Amanda Mealing, Melvin& Rickie, cast from hit Channel 4 TV show, Hollyoaks and more.

BREAKING NEWS: BLOODSHED AT THE URBAN MUSIC AWARDS IN THE U.K! EVEN UNHARMED GUESTS WERE COVERED IN BLOOD, OUTFITS MESSED UP!

Is this the shyt that happens in our stereotyped urban world of music? The first thing I thought about was my sister blogger Sumit's safety at the HipHop Chronicle who was due to cover the whole thing. The AFP is reporting that three people were injured in ugly scenes at a British music awards ceremony, with one person seriously hurt, police said Sunday.

Two others sustained minor injuries at the sixth annual Urban Music Awards at the O2 entertainment complex in southeast London on Saturday night. One person has been arrested.

"We were called at 2211 GMT on the 15th to a disturbance at the O2 Arena site," a spokesman for London's Metropolitan Police told AFP.

"We found three men suffering injuries. Two are not serious injuries, the other one is. They appeared to be stab or slash victims. There has been one arrest."

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said the three casualties had been treated at the scene and taken to hospitals.

Police sources indicated that the most serious casualty may have been stabbed and the other two might have been hit by flying glass.

The show was being held in the indigO2, a 2,350-capacity venue inside the O2 former Millennium Dome landmark.

Leona Lewis, Dizzee Rascal, Duffy and Estelle were among the performers nominated for awards.

Soul singer Mica Paris was to be presented with a lifetime achievement award.

Andre Nevling, 24, said a woman sat at the same table as himself was "covered" in blood.

"Obviously the guy who got stabbed must have run straight past her and she's pretty shaken up," he said.

"I saw blood all over the floor and then I was like, 'Jesus you're covered in it'," he said.

Another eyewitness, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "I didn't see what happened but there were champagne bottles flying and I hid under the table."

Natalie Williams, 32, said: "It's a huge shame that a small group of people have ruined everything for everyone."

KELLY ROWLAND TO PERFORM IN MY COUNTRY OF NIGERIA AT MTV'S AFRICAN MUSIC AWARD.

Superstar Kelly Rowland, who is the ambassador of MTV’s staying Alive Foundation, will be in Abuja Nov. 22 to perform at the first ever MTV Africa Music Awards.

South Africa's, Cassette, and Nigeria's, Asa will be joining Rowland on stage at The Velodrome, Abuja for MTV's celebration of African music and artists.

Rowland, Cassette and Asa will join previously announced performers The Game, D'Banj, Kwaw Kese and Professor J and other artists (still to be announced).

Since Kelly is not much of a U.S resident these days, let's see.....what will she sing? "Survivor?"

CONGRATS: MATTHEW AND TINA KNOWLES TO BAG CHARITY AWARD!

BEYONCE KNOWLES' parents are to be honoured with a major award for their children's charity efforts. Mathew and Tina Knowles are to receive the esteemed National PTA Commitment to America's Children Award. The award presentation will take place at a gala next week (30Oct08) in Chicago, Illinois.

Cash the charitable couple have raised and donated have helped to build youth centres and apartments in America, and the pair also created the Survivor Foundation with their daughters Beyonce and Solange and singer Kelly Rowland.

Matthew and Tina have really done a good job in their lives. Did I ever tell you that Matthew and I were judges in a 1993 talent show in Baltimore, Maryland? Beyonce was like a teenager then.
