OPINION: Stop Calling Mentally Challenged people #RETARDED! Observe the R-Word Day

Today March 31^st is a very important day globally in the world of mentally challenged people. Though it was celebrated March 5th this year and now 1st Wednesdays in March, I decided to observe it as I missed the new date.  It is known as the R-Word Day. Though most Nigerians may not be familiar with it, it is an initiative created by the Special Olympics to deter people around the globe from using the word ”retarded” loosely as a joke or in any other way. Mentally challenged people have often been referred to as “mentally retarded” in medical terms and in social and popular culture many have used the word “retarded” in a disrespectful and jokingly manner.

The R-word day aims to get people around the world to take the pledge at the R-Word site and promise that they will never use the term anymore in a derogatory manner. Celebrities, Sports figures, Media personalities and many public figures have been very involved in the campaign since its inception in 2008. My son KJ used the event in 2008 to educate Canadians while living in Toronto. KJ walked around a mall educating people about the R-Word day and was featured on several TV and radio stations. His older brother is autistic and educated people on the disability and why one must not make fun of mentally challenged people.

KJ requested to interview Dr Timothy Shriver, the Chairman of the Special Olympics whose mother the late Eunice Shriver founded. Dr. Shriver is the nephew of late American President John F. Kennedy and niece to Rose Kennedy, his aunt who suffered mental disability all her life. The Kennedys and Shrivers have been lifelong advocate for people with mental and physical disabilities. At the time when my son got involved, President Barack Obama has just come out of a PR disaster of sorts after he made fun of disabled people on Jay Leno’s late night comedy show in 2008.

He promptly called Dr Shriver to apologize. Shriver did not speak to any media outlet and released a statement on behalf of the families of disabled people as several were hurt by the President’s joke. My son requested to talk to Shriver through his KJ the Kid Reporter blog (TheKidReporter.net) and Shriver called my home in Toronto to speak with KJ and the only media Shriver spoke to. With KJ’s work, the Consul General of the United States Mr. John Nay gave him a commendation letter thanking him for educating Canadians and Americans alike. Bank's mistake leads to 18-year-old's arrest:

Authorities say a Georgia teen was arrested after he allegedly spent nearly all of the $31,000 that a bank accidentally deposited into his account. That happened to me before but I got to keep the money as mine was child support and I was waiting for $25,000. The Child support enforcement deposited it  but later claimed that the money was seized wrongly from the lawyer's bank account. I refuse to give the money back and my support was paid. My ex had to deal with it!

Philadelphia Police tells #HNNAfrica a TEEN has been found #SHOT in the head in a #Philadelphia apartment building at this hour. #HNNCrime  has learned that the #Philly teenager is 16y/o and has been taken to Hahneman hospital. He was said to be found at 1616 Wallace st in Springgarden.

Ironically I lived at 1700 Wallace street back in 1987 with my one year old son. Wallace is the kind of street where one block is a nice set of apartments and the next block is a ghetto and drug den.

I have personally watch bullets fly on that street several times and people hit. The area is a very heavy hispanic area when I lived there. It's a shame that gun violence is still going on. 

There is no word on the kid's condition. I also worked at Hahneman hospital as a young Pharmacy student. I hope he makes it.

He was reacting to an online report which was credited to popular blogger, Linda ikeji, who was said to have revealed that the singer was expecting a second baby from his long time lover. Linda used her blog to spread the  rumour on Tuesday with the title “Olamide is expecting baby no 2”.

In a swift reaction, Olamide took to twitter to debunk the report and lashed out at Linda for spreading false report about him. “You don’t drag people’s name through the mud just like that. You got fake news about me and you went ahead to post it on your blog. That’s unprofessional of you. With your level of achivement, you are not expected to write about what you did not verify”, the rapper said on twitter.

When speaking with Olamide during the week, the rapper said he had moved on with his life after the purported rumour but warned against such in the future. “The truth is that my career is moving and thriving according to God’s plan and I am enjoying it. Linda Ikeji or anybody can’t stop it”.

While clearing the air on his controversial visions and marriage, he said “I have said it a million times that I was never married to Queen Ure and my wife is not a banker. I am not married to a banker.

Linda Ikeji is always posting things that are not necessary. I don’t understand her and I don’t know her problem. I pray I will have an opportunity to meet her and tell her my mind. She calls my wife a banker, but my wife is not a banker. In fact, she has never worked in a bank. Queen Ure and I only had a relationship, so we were never married. There is no picture of our marriage anywhere and there is no certificate of marriage anywhere either. But when I got married to my wife, there were pictures all over the Internet.

Condemning journalists and media houses, he said “Nigerian journalists have not been so favourable to me. They have painted me in a horrible way. They tell me I jump from one woman to another. If my wife didn’t love me, she would not have married me, especially because of all the nonsense that had been written about me. My in-laws almost didn’t want to bless my marriage because of the nonsense written about me. But in the end, they found out the truth.”

Is the city going down again? Look at this picture. Since Friday one person has died and 14 injured in separate shootings all over Chicago, Illinois, USA. This young man was only 20-year-old! Gun shot wound to the head and then comes Raason Shaw shooting which was a police involved shooting.

As a guns victims advocate, I have been saying this from day one in Canada? When our boys kill each other, we don't talk. We need to disarm them and make sure they don't own guns or in possession of an illegal one. They are going to use it! Now when they point it at a cop, the cop kills them and we go NUTS! Wake up black communities. It's time we get away from these stereotypes. What was Raasan doing with a Glock semi-automatic handgun with a laser sight and extended high-capacity magazine which was recovered at the scene? Truly sad.

#HNNCrime HOW and WHY #Chicago Police KILLED Raason Shaw in #Woodlawn. #TRAGIC

Residents scuffle with officers as tensions run high in a South Side neighborhood after a man is shot and killed by Chicago Police.

Police say that the shooting happened as they interrupted a drug deal that was taking place in the neighborhood. The subsequent investigation forced them to close a five-block stretch of the area, even as a large crowd gathered to protest the shooting.

It was shortly before 9 Saturday morning, when police say two officers observed a hand-to-hand drug exchange taking place on the 6200 block of South Eberhardt.It was, they say, during the subsequent foot chase, they noticed 20-year-old Raason Shaw clutching an object in his waistband. They chased him through gangways all the way to 67th and Rhodes and that is when they say he pulled a gun on them.

"As he jumps the fence he has a 40-caliber glock with an extended clip in his hand," said Pat Camden, Fraternal Order of Police. "He goes over the fence. Sees the officer coming at him, raises the weapon towards the officer, the officer fires."

Shaw was dead on the scene. And police say a glock semi-automatic handgun with a laser sight and extended high capacity magazine was recovered, but family and friends who witnessed the shooting, insist that's not true.

"The police pulled a gun like he was going to shoot him too, telling him to back up," said Veronique Jones, the victim's cousin. "He was just laying there. He didn't have no weapon or nothing. He was just trying to hop a gate."

"He never posed a threat or anything," said friend Jay White. "He had a warrant of his arrest that he knew of...so maybe that's why he took off running."

The incident drew a large crowd of people into the streets, a lot of them angry at what they viewed as an unprovoked shooting, openly confronted police. At least three people were led away in handcuffs.

"I got a call from my daughter. She was screaming and hollering. My son was going up to his cousin's house and the next thing I know he's running through the alley and the police shot him," said Sharon Shaw, the victim's mother.

Among those who were drawn out by the shooting was Shaw's boss. She says the 20-year-old had a criminal history, but now worked for her, cleaning out foreclosed homes.

"He was a kid," said Shamika Jordan. "He had a troubled past, but he was trying to get his life together. He had started working. Comes to work every day on time. I had no complaints about him."

Shaw was wanted on a warrant for missing a court appearance for a misdemeanor criminal trespass charge. As with all police-involved shootings, it is now the Independent Police Review Authority that is in charge of the investigation.

Lots of Nigerians ripping him on twitter saying that he was too late and no cause for alarm??. What amazes some of us is the close proximity to Aso Rock Villa, the President's residence. I examined the FBI and CIA headquarters in Virginia and Washington and none were less than 100 meters from the White House. Truly disturbing considering these high level security suspects and terrorists could DISARM guards all morning!

As I said, only #HNNAfrica told you that the President has been whisked to an undisclosed location and some world leaders notified. These are standard precautions in case the jailbreak actually succeeded, then WHAT??

If you live in Abuja, stay off the streets today. Keep your Mother's day celebrations at home. Be alert with everything around you, always focus on the bigger picture and pay attention to detail. My motto!

#BREAKING What really went down with #GUNFIRE this morning in #Nigeria's capital #Abuja #HNNNigeria

Below is my twitter feed as it unfolded shortly after 7am this morning in Abuja. Gunfire in the Aso Villa area specifically the Aso Drive area of the city. #HNNAfrica is speaking to a source at the SSS. A name is floating around the internet as issuing a statement but most media outlets say Marilyn Ogar the DSS spokesperson issued a statement that it was an attempted jailbreak that caused the gunfire. 

I find it hard to believe that such inmates are kept at locations that are in close proximity to where the government functions and residential area also housing diplomatic missions and more. The Westgate attack in Nairobi is just an example of how nobody is immune from terrorist gunfire. Are we clear yet whether it is Boko Haram or any other entity? NO! What I'm being told is coming from a SOURCE. A source is someone anonymous who works at the SSS and cannot speak officially to me.

As of now 10.30am #LIVE, we have military choppers on top of SSS HQ hovering in a dangerous manner.
