Finally, Emoticons are talking on Facebook. The Likes are no longer just a word, You can now see the Like thumbs up button, Love heart shaped and Emoticon faces for Laughs (Ha! Ha!) Sad, Angry and Wow. Many people have always wanted to express their true emotions on Facebook my favourite platform online. Now it's possible.   

How my son @IamswagKid was LOCKED up and trapped in school WITHOUT a communication device #HNNTech

Earlier this week, I had the major emergency. I was livid, frantic and scared when my 15-year-old son KJ, a social media guru since 6-years-old went missing after school here in Nigeria. This is the second time this has happened in his lifetime.

The first time it was in Canada when I sent him to buy some fast food at 12-years-old and he never returned for 7hours. The Toronto Police service began tracking him by tweeting his nickname with the hashtag #KayJeezy and putting his photo in the news. He was holding our joint ATM debit card for the purchase and looking at online banking records we tracked the purchase of food at 6.30pm. He left at 6.15pm and by 1am he was found asleep in the stairwell of my apartment building and had eaten the food. He was upset before he left home as we had an argument and said he wanted to run away. He was later counselled by the school psychologist on those feelings and he was OK. What happened this week in a Nigerian school will stun you.

KJ is more mature now and a teenager and has been briefed well about security problems in Nigeria including kidnappings. At 4pm when my son normally ends school and arrives by 4.30pm, he never showed up. By 5.45pm, I started to worry. At 6.15pm my son did not return home and I asked our driver that he should go over to the school to trace his steps. What happened next shocked me. He said KJ was LOCKED inside the private school building and the gates were also locked shut with everyone gone. It was now dusk. I called the Principal and her phone was turned off.

In Nigeria people may be charging their phones due to sporadic power outages or just switched it off for the day.However my child was in the school helpless and crying through thewindows pleading for help from the driver who couldn’t hear his voice as he was banging through glass from an upstairs building. KJ is asthmatic, didn’t have his inhaler in case of an emergency and no phone on him to call us or tweet us from his handle@Iamswagkid

When the driver came back, I decided to go to the police, something the principal asked me why I did? What else could I do? I spoke to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) who had 4 armed officers escort me with their Hilux police truck as it was now dusk and darkness set in at 7.30pm. We met the Principal and Head Teacher who locks up at the end of the day both profusely apologizing to me. One of the officers demanded we all come to the station to see the DPO. It turned out that my son fell asleep while reading in class as it was after exams and students weren’t required to come. Other classes had students but not his class.

So when school closed, nobody knew he was actually in there. His teacher admitted a big mistake not checking KJ before locking up, something they call “clearing the building” in moderncountries. Last week a 13-year-old mentally handicapped girl was left overnight in a school in America. The teacher and Principal were fired by the school board. Most schools are public schools and parents could sue for millions.

What could KJ have done? Phones are banned in his school and was once seized from him. In America, phones are allowed but turned on only in emergencies or during recess. After the Columbine high school massacre in Colorado in the 90’s, I was one of the gun violence advocates that fought for the right to let the student have their cell phones to call parents or first responders.

Many of the students that got killed were in the cafeteria and library and could not get to the office for help when two of their classmates opened fire all over the school killing several. What would KJ have done with a phone? He said he would have tweeted me or called if he had credit on his line. Social media postings are also critical when you see your child tweeting or inboxing you on Facebook in an emergency. I could not imagine if he had an asthma attack or a fire broke out in the building. My child could have died in both circumstances but the school learned a valuable lesson here. I will petition for the use of a phone to be carried at all times by him and others. KJ normally walks home with classmates. They were absent that day due to exam breaks and optional attendance.

Texas – Alex from Target is a teenager, and a former Target employee, who became and an overnight celebrity. He’s popular among the teenagers who use social media which helped his exposure online.

Alex’s popularity all began on a Sunday afternoon, when a girl shopping at a Target in Texas tweeted a photo of Alex at the checkout. By Sunday evening, the photo had went viral gaining enough retweets, faves, and other teen chatter which got Alex 300,000 Twitter followers. Teens everywhere shared photos he had posted on his timeline, learning about his life, his friends, his family, and his story. Alex was featured on CNN and other major media outlets which eventually gained him a spot on The Ellen Show. Ever since that day, Alex has become an internet celebrity. However, as time passed less and less talk about the Target employed surfaced on social media. Alex’s relevancy began to dwindle and this affected Alex deeply.

It’s sad to report that Alex committed suicide earlier this morning by jumping from the roof of  a target to his death. Listen to my podcast.

Revolution News posted a Graphic video recorded and uploaded to Facebook just 5 hours ago shows LAPD shooting a homeless man. Lots of graphic language in this raw video by spectators. We are waking up to see this in Nigeria. We heard these shots here and it is making the headlines of every paper here. Social media has changed everything when people upload these graphic evidence to social media portals. In the beginning it was the cameras that captured Rodney King being beaten by LAPD but that video was handed to a lawyer and the world saw it. Now the world can upload it to almost 50 portals on social media. 

It is currently unknown why officers engaged with the victim or his current condition. Details are few, but we are presenting it for your judgment and will update when they are available.

KTLA5 reports: Officers were dispatched to the area of East Sixth Street and South San Pedro Street (map) about 11:36 a.m. after a report of an altercation between two people, said Officer Jack Richter, spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

After the officers arrived a struggle ensued, during which police tazed a man, the LAPD said. The man was then shot by police, the department said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

New research by the website Quartz goes some way to confirming a three-year-old study that showed people in south-east Asia were more likely to claim to be Facebook-users than internet-users.

That research from Helani Galpaya in Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia and Burma, saw her then boss at the LIRNEasia thinktank remark: “It seemed that in their minds, the internet did not exist; only Facebook.”

Quartz tried to replicate the phenomenon of Facebook members in emerging market countries not associating the site with the internet by commissioning surveys in Nigeria and Indonesia. The research suggested 11 per cent of Indonesians and nine per cent of Nigerians say they are active on Facebook, but don’t use the internet.

Facebook, which has 1.4billion members, has committed itself to extending internet access to the around 60 per cent of the world’s population currently cut off.

But does the disassociation of the internet and Facebook in some people’s minds mean that in the future, governments and companies will have to reach out via one site rather, and play by their rules, rather than use the open web?

#WiFiKemistry Four #SocialMedia Resolutions for 2015 By Kemi Omololu-Olunloyo

The year 2014 has been a great year for me on social media. I was even nominated for Social Influencer of the year at the Social Media Africa awards to be given out in January 2015. Most Nigerian youth have been lazy and not ready to learn on social media and I have tried my best educating them on how they can brand themselves and make a honest living from something they spend all day doing anyway? I will keep educating the youth all over Africa who need my services and never give up on the right ones.

There are things everyone should be doing for their New Year's resolution or as I call it "End of Year resolutions for 2014." Below are 4 things you need to be doing now.

1. Clean Up Your Facebook Friends List 

Facebook always said the friend limit was 5000 on a profile page and somehow my page had 5016. Well, I cleaned up the list to 1900. In 2009, a story about my autistic son ran in Nigerian publications and directed everyone into my account, I kept clicking accept until I noticed how mute people were. People just wanted to be on my page to be in my so called inner circle. The same happened every time a story was run about me in the gossip blogs or newspapers. I trended on twitter 43 times in 2013 alone from wearing a bikini which Nigerian bloggers called NUDE to ripping government officials about homophobia and our country's anti-gay law. I suddenly saw a surge in friend requests. Fortunately Facebook created the FOLLOWERS option that people can no longer make a request based on my privacy settings and they can follow me. From people disguised in magazine profiles to stealing my family pictures. Delete non active friends off your page unlike twitter where you can now MUTE people. My friends list is now exactly 1897 people I know....PLUS 4079 followers who only get to see my public statuses. If you're gonna socialize, do it with active people.

2. Start Using Social Media To Network

We all know how powerful Linkedin could be with respect to career networking but did you know that you could literally talk to anyone on twitter? BBC News found me on Twitter via NTA News Now, Nigeria's TV broadcaster after reading my recycled article on blood donation on NTA's  twitter. I am a Special Medical Correspondent for the Network writing online health articles only. I communicate with media networks faster on twitter and some executives on Facebook. Study your field of work and social media. How many people can potentially be following you. On Pinterest, I host a sponsored board for Prestige Capital Properties, a high end real estate and letting company in London, UK. Recently, another high end property company started following that board so I had to tell my client of course. Networking brings many opportunities.

3. Mute People on Twitter and Clean up Robot Accounts
Some accounts following us are bots and spam accounts. Find them, get rid of them. I did that last year and got rid of almost 5,000 followers @HNNAfrica. You must only keep the the real followers so as to maximize interaction with your followers. You need interaction on twitter and not a clogged news feed full of garbage you don't want to see. Mute the accounts you want to follow but never want to see a whole lot of the annoying tweets that go with them. I generally mute trolls and block them also reporting them for SPAM. Give those accounts the triple treatment. Never buy followers on social media. There are no interactions with them mostly robot accounts to just show you have numbers. Means nothing!

4. Monetize Your Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter Accounts
Start making noise! Empty barrels make the most money. In Nigeria, many people cannot sell themselves on social media. They are not designed to make noise just like everyone is not designed to be a people person. If you can sell sand on the beach or ice to an Eskimo, then monetize your accounts like mine @HNNAfrica and sell ads for clients. Let them use your platform to be seen. I tweet music tracks for artists, world news for international outlets, sell pinterest boards to event companies and a real estate firm showcasing houses and more. I have even tweeted for a streetside food vendor and it worked. Make money on your platforms and avoid using your twitter platform to attack and disrespect people. Nobody will want to do business with you. Several young Nigerians attack me on twitter then later ask me how they can monetize. Not on that handle, I tell many. You have to build all new followers from scratch.

Ha! Ha! First day back at work and school and it's usually Facebook outages that send people scrambling for Twitter especially when you are running news websites like mine.

Looks like by 2.30am here in Nigeria the problem is pretty much fixed, although we're still seeing delays in some tweets, and Tweetdeck doesn't seem to be working properly. For best results, visit the Twitter site.

Seems they have now fixed it and my tweetdeck is finally not stuck with old and new tweets mixed together. I ran over to their Tumblr blog to see the status and they have finally notified us. I make money on twitter. Learn how to do the same in my article in the Nigerian Tribune
