In December of 2012, I partnered with the Nigerian Tribune to bring you HipHossip Tribunal in the Friday Treat section. That hasn’t changed. Today after 6 years of creation of my blog, I decided to move it forward as a progressive news outlet for the young popular culture crowd. Living in Nigeria now has exposed me to the fact that many young people are not well groomed in current affairs. I remember my last years in Nigeria before I went to school in the UK, then America. I was the force to reckon with at WNTV, Ibadan during the weekly televised quiz shows. My father was the state Commissioner for Education at the time.
As an Abadina school, University of Ibadan student, I led the debating and the quiz team weekly on the TV show which consisted of current affairs questions. This was probably what led to my passion for broadcast Journalism in 1996 after graduating Pharmacy school in 1988 in the United States. I always pressed the buzzer first at WNTV now NTA, Ibadan and we always won. We had long streaks of winning until the historical moment when everyone knew Olukemi Omololu-Olunloyo, thanks to the Nigerian Tribune who ran the headline “Abadina Loses, Daughter of Education Commissioner cries on TV after loss.” Oh yes, after the last question cost my school the title of champions, I cried on national television and that was when I became a public figure of sorts with that Nigerian Tribune headline. Last year at the Ibadan Poetry awards where I was a Judge, the same happened with another school team and I remember going on stage to give the students a supportive hug while they were sobbing.
Current affairs was fun then, but returning home I discovered most students I meet on the streets don’t even know the Vice President’s name or can list all the state commissioners. Notwithstanding the fact that Oyo State has changed and reshuffled commissioners twice in a year, students should be able to at least know what is going on in the news. Nigeria has a lot of media outlets, blogs and also the internet.
HipHossipNewsnet will focus mostly on Global news so as to let young people know what is going on in the world. This past week was saturated with terrorism in Nairobi, mass shootings in America and even a cabinet dissolve here in Oyo State. It is very important that students know the news outside this country as well. I grew up close to 37 years abroad and with that being said, HipHossip newsnet is here to serve the needs of everyone interested in World News especially the young crowd. I am touting it like the concept MTV news started for young people. All my social media portals stay the same on Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube, Facebook and more. All recorded newscasts will be at Facebook.com/RadioHossip and HipHossip.com remains the main website. The main portal for the news headlines will be on Twitter @HipHossip and will provide news, sports, traffic and recorded newscasts. E-mail is new at RadioHossip@gmail.com
