"Right now, the MF life is magnificently fantastic, to be sure," laughs the Toronto-born R&B singer-songwriter down the line from her new home in New York City. "It's been amazing."
No wonder. It's barely been a month since 28-year-old Fiona took home the first two Grammys of her career, winning traditional R&B performance and R&B song honours for her contributions to a non-album version of Cee Lo Green's song Fool for You. After bolting to the podium in her gown and heels at the non-televised portion of the awards, she charmed attendees ("It is so nice to meet all of you!") and paid a moving tribute to her inspiration Whitney Houston ("I would not be standing up here if it was not for you").
There's a good chance it won't be her last acceptance speech. Fiona's eagerly anticipated sophomore album -- fittingly titled The MF Life -- arrives in stores and online March 20. Blending her classic R&B and soul songcraft and powerful vocals with the contemporary production of Salaam Remi, No ID, Andrea Martin and others -- not to mention cameos by Nas, John Legend and more -- the relationship-themed followup to her well-received 2009 debut The Bridge seems perfectly timed to propel her career to new heights.
Bam! When I spoke to her last year on the Stylus awards red carpet in Toronto about getting a Grammy one day and how she hopes to achieve that? At 25, she came home with TWO!--MsKemi @HipHossip
