The Vito Russo Award is presented to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender media professional who has made a significant difference in promoting equality. Previous recipients include Anderson Cooper, Ricky Martin, Rosie O'Donnell, Alan Cumming, Cynthia Nixon, Nathan Lane, Cherry Jones, Elton John, k.d. lang, and Tom Ford.
Takei came out of the closet in 2005 and married Brad Altman, his partner of 21 years, in 2008. Among the issue that Takei has spoken out about: marriage equality, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), "ex-gay therapy," anti-LGBT bullying, and bringing equality to the Boy Scouts.
"Few voices have been as outspoken in support of equality as George Takei," said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD President and CEO.
Although Minogue won't be receiving an award, her credentials are almost as strong. In addition to headlining LGBT pride events and performing at LGBT venues such as London's G-A-Y nightclub and New York City's Splash Bar, Minogue is known for including images of LGBT people in her music videos (most notably the video for "All the Lovers.")
The 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards will be held on May 3 in New York City.
