A 3-year-old girl died Saturday after police officers found her bruised and unresponsive in a Brooklyn apartment, the New York Police Departmentsaid.
A suspect has been taken into custody in connection to the death, investigators said, but the person’s identity has not been released because charges had not been filed. The police did not disclose whether he or she was related to the child.
The girl, identified as Jeida Torres, was unconscious when officers arrived shortly before 4 p.m. at the home on Cooper Street in Bushwick, the police said. Another child, a 5-year-old boy, was also found bruised, but he was alert. Officers had gone to the apartment after a 911 call reporting a possible crime in the apartment.
Jeida was in cardiac arrest when she was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. The boy, who was also hospitalized there, had injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, the police said.
