Former GENESIS star PETER GABRIEL has joined the fight to halt developments at the picturesque English valley which inspired his song SOLSBURY HILL. The rocker wrote the 1977 track after a "spiritual experience" at the beauty spot in Somerset, England, close to where he once lived in nearby Woolley Valley. But he is fuming over plans to scar the landscape with building works - several agricultural sheds have already been erected and construction ha s reportedly begun to drain a local meadow. There are also plans to turn a barn into offices.
Gabriel has teamed up with local residents to launch a campaign to save the valley and will hold a press conference on Wednesday (19May10) to detail plans for a legal challenge. Locals have already plastered the area with 'Save Woolley Valley' posters and put together a petition in a bid to halt the work. Gabriel says, "The development is making a mockery of our planning and environmental policies. I can only think that (the local council) don't h ave the resources to fight it."
