In Oyo, it’s governance at its best
It’s three years now since Senator Abiola Ajimobi took the mantle of leadership as the Executive Governor of Oyo State. Even though the journey has been tortuous, the governor has, right from the blast of the whistle on May 29, 2011, demonstrated his ability and capability to take the state out of the doldrums. Oyo State, which used to set the pace in virtually all indices of development, had the misfortune of being superintended by inept administrations for eight years and things went awry for the state. Rather than use the rare opportunity given them by the good people of Oyo State to turn things around, they ran the state aground, and thus development and good governance took a flight.
The collective resolve of the otherwise bewildered citizens to chase away the reactionary forces and install Senator Ajimobi through popular votes has, however, brought fresh air to Oyo State. At the apex of his pyramid of development was security and peace which had for some time eluded the state owing to the aiding and abetting of hoodlums operating under the aegis of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) by the then governments. With peace and tranquility successfully brought back to Oyo State through Governor Ajimobi’s ingenuity, the stage was set for developments in all the sectors of the state’s economy.
From urban renewal through environmental sanitation to infrastructural revolution, the governor has made indelible marks. The unfortunate typecast of the state being the second dirtiest in Nigeria has gone for good as the weekly environmental sanitation exercise introduced by the Ajimobi administration, coupled with the monthly exercise has succeeded in clearing the huge debris which used to dot the nooks and crannies of the state, particularly Ibadan, the state capital. The environment is now comely and inviting.
The resultant effect is the unprecedented influx of both local and foreign investors into the state to partner with government in bringing development back to the state. In education and health, Oyo State has never had it so good. While virtually all the general hospitals in the state are currently receiving facelift, massive infrastructural development is also ongoing in both primary and secondary schools. This is aside the upgrade of six existing secondary schools to model schools and the training and re-training of over 23,000 teachers in capacity building. The civil service has also undergone a wholesale reform, with workers now better positioned for better service delivery.
Traders, artisans and the ordinary folks have equally had a taste of the dividends of democracy, while governance has been taken to the doorsteps of the people and developments manifesting in all the nooks and crannies of the state, a clear departure from the past when Oyo State was at a standstill.
Even the most ardent critics of the Ajimobi administration could not but admit the failures of the past and the transformation currently being witnessed in Oyo State under the leadership of Governor Ajimobi whose passion for the development of the state has been his driving force.
Happy Democracy Day !!!
